Svenska Cupen (the "Swedish Cup") is the main Swedish football Cup. The winners qualify for the UEFA Cup. Each year (since the new rules with fewer teams began), 98 teams compete, comprising the 14 teams from Allsvenskan (the All Swedish League - first level of Swedish football) and the 16 teams of Superettan (the Super Division 1 - second level of Swedish football) together with 68 teams from lower (district) series. Compared to cups in many other countries, the Swedish Cup attracts considerably less public interest and even the cup final is rarely sold out. Consequently the Swedish Football Association has experimented with the format in order to raise the profile of the cup. The final has been staged at a neutral venue, at the national stadium as well as being played as a two-leg match. As of 2008, the city to host the final is being drawn as the winner in one of the semi finals. A separate Svenska Cupen exists for women's association football. |
