Kuppali Venkatappagowda Puttappa ( ) (December 29, 1904 - November 11, 1994) was a Kannada writer and poet, widely regarded as the greatest poet of 20th century Kannada literature. He is the first among seven recipients of Jnanpith Award for Kannada. Puttappa wrote all his literary works using the pen name Kuvempu. He is the second among Kannada poets to be revered as Rashtrakavi (after M. Govinda Pai). His work Sri Ramayana Darshanam, the rewriting of the great ancient Indian epic Ramayana in modern Kannada, is regarded as revival of the era of Mahakavya (Epic poetry) in a contemporary form and charm. He is immortalised by some of his phrases, and in particular for his contribution to Universal Humanism or in his own words Vishwa maanavataa Vaada. He was conferred Padma Bhushan by Government of India. He has penned the Karnataka State anthem 'Jaya Bharata Jananiya tanujate'.

The song is the main pick from his famous collection 'Manuja Matha Vishwa Patha' (One world, one cast, one path). Kuvempu spreads the wonderful message of universal humanism among people. This poem in particular inspires man to let his spirit/consciousness to break out of the narrow confines of home, religion and country, and become free to reach for the eternal and universal path. Poet Dr. KV Puttappa (Kuvempu) is notably the greatest poet of 20th century Kannada literature. He was also a great writer, playwright. He has penned over 70 collections of poems, plays, novels each of which is a joy to read. Many of his works convey a profound social message applicable at all times. The epic 'Sri Ramayana Darshanam', his famous rewriting of the great ancient Indian epic Ramayana in modern Kannada won him the prestigious 'Jnanapeeth Award'.
