Karnataka Ratna ( ) is the highest civilian honour of the State of Karnataka. It is awarded to a person for his extraordinary contribution in any field. It was constituted in the year 1992 by the Government of Karnataka. There have been a total of 8 recipients of this award.

PANDIT Sri S.BALLESH is a disciple of world renowned Shehnai Maestro BHARAT RATNA USTAD BISMILLAH KHAN SAHEB, and known as south Indian film music "SHEHNAI CHAKRAVATHY" and called as DAKSHIN BHARAT BISMILLAH KHAN by Guru ji Ustad Bismillah Khan Saheb.He born on 1st april 1958 in MKHUBLI (Belgaum district) in KARNATAKA ,hails from the illustrious family of renowned "Shehnai players" for past 300years,his father Pandit Sanna Bharamanna ji himself a famous shehnai player of note has been his 1st GURU ji .He continued under his uncle Shehnai Vidwan Sri. Dhodda Bharamanna ji. At the age of 9yrs he started his carrer. He learnt Hindustani vocal in kirana gharana from Dr. DP.Hiremath and started to playing vocal style (Gayaki ang) in his instrument shehnai. He gave his first public performance at the age of 15yrs in 1973 at Sri Sadguru Balaiyogi Swami ji Thourgad math(Hubli).He learnt PATIALA GHARANA khayal gayaki from Hyderabad Nizam's Court Asthan Vidwan Maharasthra Maha Pandit Sri. He became actively involved in the movement and soon became the force behind the Gokak movement. He took a rally from Belgaum to Bangalore and gave speeches about the importance of Kannada. Lakhs of people gathered only to have a glimpse of Rajkumar and listen to his speech. The movement became such a rage that the government relented and made Kannada a compulsory language of education in Karnataka. Rajkumar started his career as a theater artist with his father in a troupe led by the legendary Gubbi Veeranna. It was here that Rajkumar honed his acting and singing skills. Later, along with his father, Rajkumar joined MS Subbayya Naidu Drama Company. Bedara Kannappa, a 1954 Kannada language movie, marked his entry into the film world. This movie was directed by HLN Simha, who christened him "Rajkumar". Rajkumar would use the same name for the rest of his life. He later forayed into film production with the hugely popular Ranadheera Kanteerava, which he produced with another legend of Kannada cinema, Balakrishna. This movie which was made exclusively with technicians from Karnataka also marked the beginning of full-fledged filmmaking in Karnataka.
