iOS (known as iPhone OS prior to June 2010) is Apple's mobile operating system. Originally developed for the iPhone, it has since been extended to support other Apple devices such as the iPod touch, iPad and Apple TV. Apple does not license iOS for installation on third-party hardware. , Apple's App Store contains more than 300,000 iOS applications, which have collectively been downloaded more than 10 billion times. In the last quarter of 2010, it had a 16% share of the smartphone operating system market in terms of units sold, third behind Google's Android and Symbian. As of May 2010 it accounted for 59% of mobile web consumption (not including the iPad) in North America.

The user interface of iOS is based on the concept of direct manipulation, using multi-touch gestures. Interface control elements consist of sliders, switches, and buttons. The response to user input is immediate and provides a fluid interface. Interaction with the OS includes gestures such as swipe, tap, pinch, and reverse pinch, all of which have specific definitions within the context of the iOS operating system and its multitouch interface. Internal accelerometers are used by some applications to respond to shaking the device (one common result is the undo command) or rotating it in three dimensions (one common result is switching from portrait to landscape mode).

iOS is derived from Mac OS X, with which it shares the Darwin foundation, and is therefore a Unix-like operating system by nature.

In iOS, there are four abstraction layers: the Core OS layer, the Core Services layer, the Media layer, and the Cocoa Touch layer. The operating system uses roughly 500 megabytes of the device's storage, varying for each model.

Apple iPhone 4 G - Steve Jobs demo fail !!! Problems during WWDC 2010 2010 (pocketnowvideo) The iPhone 4 is drastically different than the iPhone 3G or 3GS. To start, it has an all new design features a sheet of glass on the front as well as the rear. Having glass on the rear means that it is scratch resistant. The edges are aluminum and act as the antenna for the WiFi, Bluetooth, and cellular radios. The iPhone 4 is the thinnest smartphone available at 9.3mm, but is a bit heavier than the iPhone 3GS. PS: iPHONE 3G USERS, READ Today, Sep. 8th, APPLE RELEASED iOS 4.1. I HAVE HAD IT FOR A WHILTE BECAUSE I AM A DEVELOPER, BUT APPLE SAYS IT SPEEDS UP THE 3G MODEL. I DO NOT HAVE A 3G TO TRY IT ON. Also 3GS users should just go to iOS 4.1, because there isn't to many reasons to JailBreak in my opinion. But once again, this does work, and you choose what you want. IMPORTANT UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xLxSxProduCtionz www.xLxSxProduCtionz.com DevCenter www.xLxSxDevelopment.info READ TUTORIAL HERE: tinyurl.com Programs Needed: MAC: tinyurl.com PC: tinyurl.com Linux: tinyurl.com RecBoot Update: MAC v1.0.2: tinyurl.com Win v1.1: tinyurl.com Download Firmwares Here: www.felixbruns.de "I just downgraded the official release of iOS4 back to iOS 3.1.3. I think the thing he left out in this video is that you have to download and install libusb.pkg on the mac and then go through the process as explained here. It works exactly as he said in the video. I have downgraded 2 times before using a iRecovery Hack through Terminal.app but this recboot.app is awesome and easy to use. Hope this helps you guys out. iOS4 for the 3G sucked. I will wait till there is an update to iOS4." - Thanks to bertrandgolf www.Youtube.com/bertrandgolf
