Fuad was less than a year old at the time of his accession to the throne, thus, he was never formally crowned. He became king following the abdication of his father, King Farouk I, and joined his family in exile after the monarchy was overthrown in 1953. The Council of Regency headed by Prince Muhammad Abdul Moneim represented him in Egypt while he was in exile. King Farouk had hoped that his abdication would appease the revolutionaries and other anti-royalist forces in the country, and that the baby king could serve as a unifying force for Egypt. Both gambles proved incorrect. After being deposed, Ahmad Fuad was brought to Switzerland, where he was raised and continues to live, remaining as pretender to both thrones. |
