The Free State of Brunswick ( ) was a republic formed after the abolition of the Duchy of Brunswick at the end of World War I. It was a member state of Germany during the time of the Weimar Republic.
In 1946, the Free State of Brunswick was broken up by the Allied administration of Germany. The majority of Brunswick became part of the newly founded state (Land) of Lower Saxony under British administration while some small parts (mainly around Blankenburg am Harz) became part of Soviet-administered Saxony-Anhalt.
