Experimental rock or avant-garde rock is a type of music based on rock which experiments with the basic elements of the genre, or which pushes the boundaries of common composition and performance technique.

Performers may also attempt to individualize their music with unconventional time signatures, instrumental tunings, unusual harmony and key signatures, compositional styles, lyrical techniques, elements of other musical genres, singing styles, instrumental effects or custom-made experimental musical instruments.

Silver Apples "You and I" from the 1969 "Contact" LP (Kapp Records) bio: Silver Apples are a psychedelic electronic music duo from New York City composed of Simeon Coxe III, who performed as Simeon, on a primitive synthesizer of his own devising (also named The Simeon), and drummer Danny Taylor. The group was active between 1967 and 1969, before reforming in the mid 1990s. They were one of the first groups to employ electronic music techniques extensively within a rock idiom, and their minimalistic style, with its pulsing, driving beat and frequently discordant modality, anticipated not only the experimental electronic music and krautrock of the 1970s, but underground dance music and indie rock of the 1990s as well.

Swans were an influential American rock, experimental and post-industrial band active from 1982 to 1997, led by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira. Swans were one of the few groups to emerge from the New York No Wave scene intact. The band was formed in 1982 by Michael Gira, and employed a shifting lineup of musicians until their dissolution in 1997. Besides Gira, the only other semi-constant members were keyboardist/vocalist Jarboe, and, to an extent, guitarist Norman Westberg. Experimental Art rock Noise rock Post-industrial Post-punk No Wave

(This featured music) is from the artist Jorge Rico - Picnic at Hanging Rock Theme music 2001 - "Pan Pipe Melodies" album. Purchased from iTunes music. www.apple.com -------------------------------------------- Just added to read for anyone interested - www.amazon.com en.wikipedia.org Marcel Cellier, owner of the Swiss record label Disques other big hit of 1975 was Flutes De Pan et Orgue ("Pan Flute and Organ"), a 1971 recording of traditional Romanian pan flute music, performed by virtuoso Romanian pan flautist Gheorge Zamfir, and accompanied by Cellier himself on organ. The international vogue for Zamfir's music is largely due to Australian film director Peter Weir. His 1975 film Picnic at Hanging Rock, one of the most successful Australian feature films of the period, featured evocative music from the Cellier disc on the soundtrack, and the film's success created widespread interest in Zamfir and his music. The popularization of the album was, ironically, the inadvertent outcome of a frustrated plan. Weir had been introduced to Zamfir's music a few years earlier, and when he began production on Picnic he decided to use pan flute music on the soundtrack; he approached Zamfir to compose original music in the same style, but Zamfir declined, so Weir was obliged to return to the music he had originally heard and licence some of the tracks from the Cellier LP. The irony is that, although it made him internationally famous, Zamfir would have made far more money from the ...

National Health was a progressive rock band associated with the Canterbury Scene. Founded in 1975 by keyboardists Dave Stewart (from Hatfield and the North) and Alan Gowen (from Gilgamesh), the band also included guitarists Phil Miller and Phil Lee and bassist Mont Campbell as original members. Bill Bruford was the initial drummer but was soon replaced by Pip Pyle. Campbell was replaced by Neil Murray and then John Greaves. A frequently changing lineup toured extensively and released two LPs of often lengthy, mostly instrumental, complexly scored compositions before splitting up in 1980. After the May 1981 death of Gowen, remaining members reconvened to record the album DS Al Coda, a set of compositions by Gowen, most previously unrecorded. The original albums and additional archival material have subsequently been released on CD. Their 1978 record Of Queues and Cures, which included Peter Blegvad (guitar, vocals) and Georgie Born (cello), is currently held as the third best record ever (of 53000 candidate records) on the Gnosis web site. wikipedia weird shit, i like it.

A great song written by Yoko Ono from the greatest album "Approximately Infinite Universe" in 1972. "Approximately Infinite Universe" is a double album by Yoko Ono, released in early 1972. It represents a departure from the experimental avant garde rock of her first two albums towards a more conventional pop/rock sound, while also dabbling in feminist rock. It peaked at #193 in the United States. Yang yang goes talking to himself on the phone. Yang yang sends his men pebbles and stones, Yang yang rips his women down to the bones. I own you, I own you, so give us a song, Yang yang goes talking to his world on the phone. Yang yang born with a phone cord round his neck, Yang yang never fails to stick to his kick. King Crimson is a rock band founded in Dorset, England in 1969. Although often categorised as a foundational progressive rock group, the band has incorporated diverse influences and instrumentation during its history (including jazz and folk music, classical and experimental music, psychedelic rock, hard rock and heavy metal, new wave, gamelan, electronica and drum and bass). The band has been influential on many contemporary musical artists, and has gained a large cult following despite garnering little radio or music video airplay. The band's lineup (centred on guitarist Robert Fripp) has persistently altered throughout its existence, with eighteen musicians and two lyricists passing through the ranks. A greater degree of stability was achieved later on in its history, with current frontman Adrian Belew having been a consistent member since 1981. Though originating in England, the band has had a mixture of English and American personnel since 1981. The debut lineup of the band was influential, but short-lived, lasting for just over one year. Between 1970 and 1971, King Crimson was an unstable band, with many personnel changes and disjunctions between studio and live sound as the band explored elements of jazz, funk and classical chamber music. By 1972 the band had a more stable lineup and developed an improvisational sound mingling hard rock, contemporary classical music, free jazz and jazz-fusion before breaking up in 1974. The band re-formed with a new line-up in 1981 ...
