County Donegal (c-eniconˈdɒnɨɡɔːl or c-enˌdɒnɨˈɡɔːl; ) is one of the administrative counties of the Republic of Ireland and one of the thirty-two traditional counties of the island of Ireland. It is located in the Province of Ulster in the north of the country. It is the northernmost county in all of Ireland and is named after the town of Donegal. The population of the county is 147,264 according to the 2006 census. In terms of size and area, it is the largest county in Ulster and the fourth largest county in all of Ireland.

At various times in its history, it has been known as County Tirconaill, County Tirconnell or County Tyrconnell ( ). The former was used as its official name during 1922 1927. This is in reference to both the old túath of Tír Chonaill and the earldom that succeeded it.

Uniquely, County Donegal shares a border with only one other county in the Republic - County Leitrim. The majority of its land border is shared with the Northern Irish counties of County Londonderry, County Tyrone and County Fermanagh. This apparent economic 'isolation' has led to Donegal people maintaining a distinct cultural identity and has been used to market the county with the slogan Up here it's different. It has been labelled the 'forgotten county' by its own politicians, owing to the increasing regularity with which it is ignored by the Irish Government, even in times of crisis.

Much of the county is seen as being a bastion of Gaelic culture and the Irish language, the county holding the second-largest Gaeltacht area in the country with a population of 24,504. While the largest town is Letterkenny by population, Lifford is the county town. Both Letterkenny and the nearby City of Derry form the main economic axis of the North-West of Ireland.

Here's beautiful Bundoran, in Donegal on the North West coast of Ireland. Bundoran is a seaside resort on the Atlantic and the surf is pretty good there. We caught these surfers one very fine day at the end of May 2009. The sun was splitting the rocks that day:) Enjoy. Listen to our interview on Womens Radio where we discuss the work we do in the Wyllie O Hagan St Patrick's Day Film Festival. Thanks www.womensradio.com Music: Surfing in the bathtub by Jorge Arroyo Info from the Surf Directory www.thesurfdirectory.co.uk Bundoran - The Peak Bundoran, County Donegal Bundoran is the surf capital of Ireland, a small seaside town with a number of good breaks within easy walking distance from the town and the holiday accommodation making Bundoran a perfect place for surfing holiday. The Peak is legendary wave a long V-shaped reef which juts out into the middle of the bay facing west-north-west and offers a short hollow right, and a long bashable left. It works well off a west to southwest swells and can hold waves up to 10 feet. Best two hours either side of low tide. It's one the most perfect waves in Europe and is ridable on most wind directions. Gets crowded, but nothing like as crowded as, say, Croyde or Fistral even on a good day. Not a wave for beginners; expect to get a thrashing if you get it wrong. Show respect to the locals and be friendly and you'll be treated to some of the legendary Irish hospitality. 3-D is a short hollow right-hander between The Peak and the beach ...

"The Plea's infectious sound is steeped in a rich musical texture of swirling guitars and lavish drum beats and with the release of their first single, the inspirational 'I Am The Miracle,' b/w 'Praise Be' are about to take the band on an amazing voyage of discovery, as they head into the dark, murky uncharted waters of rock 'n' roll, but not after earning their spurs the hard way. The Plea are the brothers Doherty; Denny and Dermot from the small town of Ballyliffen, County Donegal who plied their trade busking on the streets of London, before moving to Boston, where by day they worked on building sites and by night our dynamic duo played the city's bustling, Irish pub circuit. They spent a year in Minnesota after an American major label funded an album recorded in a big budget studio, but it never saw the light of day. So in 2009, back in Ballyliffen, the brothers brought in drummer Gerry Strawbridge and bassist Paul Toland, wrote a batch of new songs and posted them on their MySpace page. Interest from labels was immediate, but one offer in particular intrigued them. The founders of legendary, Belgian, dance label R&S Records were so impressed by the songs and after lengthy discussions on Skype they signed the band and became their first ever rock signing. The band have just finished recording their debut album with Chris Potter (The Verve, The Rolling Stones, U2) which will be released later this year, but in the meantime open your heart up to The Plea.
