Former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has teamed up with the Chevron Oil Corporation and a think tank to reduce poverty worldwide. While Rice has been long affiliated with Chevron, their gameplan seems the most unlikely part of the equation. Chevron wouldn't pay for poisoning 1400 people by dumping oil in Ecuador, so why would they care about the Third World now? Investigative journalist Greg Palast says this partnership is fooling no one but the American press. Follow Lauren on Twitter at twitter.com

The Dow index gave up last week's success and slipped back slightly over the weekend. US and European stock markets closed lower on Friday after the latest US corporate results disappointed high hopes and pushed Wall Street back down through the key 10000 points level. The US budget deficit hit a record US$1.4 trillion to the end of the fiscal year, the US government said on Friday, as the recession and a series of bank rescues cut a hole in public finances. That figure was US$162 billion smaller than the White House had forecast in August, but it still amounted to 10 percent of total US economic output, the most for any budget shortfall since World War Two. The Australian dollar opened lower today, as investor appetite for the risk sensitive currency decreased following poor profit results from major US companies. Key Economic Facts and Figures Forecasters are revising their unemployment figures and expecting the unemployment rate to peak at 6.8 per cent in the middle of next year. The Federal Government had previously flagged a rise in unemployment to 8.5 cent by mid-2010, when delivering its Budget last May. The jobless rate currently stands at 5.7 per cent. There is a clean alternative to Nuclear and Fossil Fuel energy production. Geothermal electricity is electricity generated from geothermal energy. Technologies in use include dry steam power plants, flash steam power plants and binary cycle power plants. Geothermal electricity generation is currently used in 24 countries while geothermal heating is in use in 70 countries. In the 20th century, demand for electricity led to the consideration of geothermal power as a generating source. Prince Piero Ginori Conti tested the first geothermal power generator on 4 July 1904 in Larderello, Italy. It successfully lit four light bulbs. Later, in 1911, the world's first commercial geothermal power plant was built there. Experimental generators were built in Beppu, Japan and the Geysers, California, in the 1920s, but Italy was the world's only industrial producer of geothermal electricity until 1958. In 2010, the United States led the world in geothermal electricity production with 3086 MW of installed capacity from 77 power plants; the largest group of geothermal power plants in the world is located at The Geysers, a geothermal field in California. The Philippines follows the US as the second highest producer of geothermal power in the world, with 1904 MW of capacity online; geothermal power makes up approximately 18% of the country's electricity generation. Geothermal power is highly scalable: a large geothermal plant can power entire cities while a smaller power plant can supply a ...
