Blyford (Blythford) is a village and civil parish in the Waveney district of Suffolk, England, about 3 mi (4.8 km) east of Halesworth and separated from Wenhaston by the River Blyth, Suffolk to the south.

Not to be confused with

Blyth Haven (south end of the town of Southwold)

Blythburgh, on the same river, further east, half way between Halesworth and Southwold.

Population in 1801 was 163 and by 1840 had risen to 223.

In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Blyford like this:

Blyford, formerly Blythford, is a parish in Blything district, Suffolk; on the river Blythe, 2½ miles E by S of Halesworth r. station. Post Town, Halesworth. Acres, 947. Real property, £1,548. Pop., 193. Houses, 41. The living is a donative in the diocese of Norwich. Value, not reported. Patron, the Rev. Jeremy Day. The church, made of mainly flint, has two Norman doors and a perpendicular English tower, but is mainly decorated English.

BBC Radio Suffolk 2010-08-09 reported on the 14th/15th century thatched Queen's Head Inn. The inn sign features St Etheldreda as the Queen. Chickens are located at the inn. The thatched roof was replaced in 1988 after a fire.

The church is just across the road from the inn with rumours of a smugglers passage.

The church seats 55 and was built in 1088, with a 13th century font added.

Yep, this goes along the back of Henham Park, the venue for Latitude Festival. And I get a Norbert Dentressangle lorry! For all who don't know a Tour de France support vehicle, usually hughly supportive of cyclists!

Sadly, at this moment, the Queen's Head in Blyford is shut otherwise I'd be doing this trip a lot more, although mostly after dark!

Always liked this backroute to Wangford. And now it's become a National Cycle Route, well some of it. However, this means very little apart from adding some nice blue signs to the side of the road. I'm really not sure if that does anything for cycling. Funny what money gets spent on. Or is it? This is another scheme that effectively preaches to the converted. There's nothing here that'll encourage people to use cycling seriously. It's just another "holiday" scheme and as such useless.

Nice green lane through the woods and marshes just south of the Blyth estuary. Unfortunately, the only path bikes are allowed down in this area, although the old Southwold Railway does come close by.

This road isn't too bad, the odd muppet holiday driver not paying enough attention but at least most are going quite slow. The road to the common is great and has pretty much no traffic. Unfortunately, the surface runs out before the bridge.

Not too bad. The last bit along the A12 is poorly signed. There's a crossing to help cyclists away from the heavy traffic on this narrow section of the A12 and allow them on the path. However, after a while it becomes very clear it's no longer a cycle path. No drop kerbs or markings. I suspect bikes are meant to go up the rough track almost immediately after crossing. Only it's not signed or for anyone but offroad bikes.

For the first short section, remember the Highway Acts of 1835 and 1878 (ish, can't remember dates!) did not intrinsically ban cycling on paths just those next to roads. Unless there's a bylaw banning it here, I'm free to ride. Then, the harbour with it's boats and catch. You can usually find some seafood worth buying! Then along the dunes and up to town.

A short wander around Southwold including crossing the main town green, turning through the market square (er, triangle), down to the Lord Nelson, along to the North Promenade, back past the Lighthouse and the Sole Bay Inn to Adnams brewery, and finally along to Fat Face (because I know someone!). Oh, and just before that, a pedestrian crossing the road without looking at all. I jam on all the brakes as I should, sigh.
