Sarah Virginia Wade, OBE (born 10 July 1945) is a former English tennis player. She won three Grand Slam singles championships and four Grand Slam doubles championships. She won the women's singles championship at Wimbledon on 1 July 1977, in that tournament's centenary year, the last time any Briton has won a singles championship at that tournament. She was also the last Briton to win any Grand Slam singles championship. After retiring from competitive tennis, she coached for four years.

There was nothing in tennis like the rowdy crowds, half-drunk commentators, and suspenseful team atmosphere of World Team Tennis during its full-flight years from 1975-1978. Chrissie had some thrilling battles against Britain's Virginia Wade in the 1977 WTT season, and we're happy to be able to share one of those with you here. It may even explain a little bit of what built so many player's allegiance to being part of it, even if it meant missing a grand slam event to do so. (It was VERY fun!) ...Aside from being fairly lucrative, it was a way for the top players to celebrate each other in a way that did not otherwise appear on the regular circuit.

Steffi Graf, Virginia Wade on Steffi Graf. The perfect athlete. Also Bud Collins on Steffi playing with injury. When considering Steffi's greatness, one has to take into account the many ways in which she was praised. There are many such examples in this archive. Here she is praised for her athletic talent and for her ability to play through pain and injury. Remember these criteria when judging today's players. WTA Championships 1998

Steffi Graf: Virginia Wade comments in 1991 on what went wrong with Steffi's game from 90-93. You'll note she never once mentions Monica Seles. She attributes the slump in Steffi's play to two factors: Steffi's general psychological state (her confidence) and Gabriela Sabatini. Wimbledon 1991

Steffi Graf, Virginia Wade comments on Steffi and the 1992 French Final: These comments dovetail quite nicely with what Virginia Wade says in the other clips in this archive about that period. See Steffi Graf (Virginia Wade on What Went Wrong from 90-92). Wimbledon 1992

The 1970 Wightman Cup was played at Wimbledon, and one of the most dramatic Wightman Cup ties ever played. In the best-of-seven match format, the US and Great Britain were tied at 3-3, and the deciding match was suppose to pit Billie Jean King and Nancy Richey against Virginia Wade and Winnie Shaw. Richey, however, seriously injured her knee in a singles match against Wade earlier in the day and was unable to play the doubles. The only available substitute was Jane "Peaches" Bartkowicz (Mary Ann Eisel and Julie Heldman had already played at #2 doubles). Peaches was extremely nervous about playing with Billie Jean in the deciding match, especially since she was a singles player who rarely came to the net to volley. To ease her nerves, Billie Jean asked Peaches "would you like to stay back when I serve?" Peaches immediately felt better, and with Peaches hitting bullets from the baseline and lobbing, and Billie Jean poaching all over the net, the Americans won 7-5 6-8 6-2. In her second autobiography, Billie Jean wrote that this was the match that she was the most proud of.
