The university specialises in technical studies, with separate faculties for Education, Pure Sciences, Management, and Human Resources Development. It is the country's major source of graduate engineers and similar professionals. Alumni of UTM have been instrumental in developing sectors related to engineering and technology in Malaysia.
Of its more than 20,000 students over 25% are postgraduates. Since the 1990s, the number of foreign students, particularly from neighbouring Asian countries, the Middle East, and Africa, has been increasing, especially in postgraduate programs.
