In Sri Lanka, at least eight people have been killed after a suicide attack in the capital Colombo. The bomber targeted a security checkpoint near a crowded market in a city suburb. Here's more on the story. The bloody aftermath of a suicide attack on a security checkpoint in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo. Eight people died when a bomber detonated a device inside a civil defence guard post near a crowded market. Most of the dead were members of the security forces, but a passerby was also killed. This taxi driver was in the market when the bomber struck. [Kanapathiratna Pushparaja, Taxi Driver]: "I work out of the market. I heard a loud explosion and one person ran out shouting. I took one of the injured and took him to hospital. My friends also took drove some of the injured to hospital." 17 people were hurt in the blast which bore the hallmarks of a Tamil Tiger attack. It comes amid an ongoing military offensive against the separatist rebels in the north. Heavy fighting is raging around the rebels' self-proclaimed capital Kilinochchi. The army says it close to defeating the Tigers. Since launching an offensive in September, government forces have systematically captured rebel-held-territory in the most successful campaign in the 25-year old war. More than 60000 people have died in Asia's longest-running conflict.

On the Listening Post this week, the civil war has ended in Sri Lanka but the media war continues and anonymity in the blogosphere: Is it a good thing? In part two Listening Posts Salah Khadr delves into the world of online anonymity and looks at some cases that have got people asking: is online anonymity a good thing? Our report begins with a typical argument in the Internet age. A model in New York badmouthed someone, who then set up an anonymous blog, and got back at the model, by maligning her online. But the model fought back, with lawyers. She took Google to court to force Google to reveal the bloggers identity, and won. The blogger is now threatening to take Google back to court for revealing who she was. The argument itself was petty, but the ruling has implications that go far beyond this case and could end up affecting the rights of all bloggers to anonymity. Our report will try to answer some these difficult questions and present you with enough information to make your own mind up.

As the Sri Lankan government tightens its grip on northern strongholds long held by the Tamil Tiger rebel movement the media is being subjected to censorship, intimidation and news blackouts. The head of Sri Lankas state funded broadcaster has called on the media to restore peace and harmony. And the stakes are high. A leading editor of an opposition paper has been murdered, and international news channels find themselves threatened with expulsion from the island unless they play by the rules.

Voters in northern Sri Lanka are to elect municipal officials in the first post-war polls on Saturday, three months after the military defeated the Tamil Tiger separatists. The government says it has re-settled several thousand people who fled the final battle of the 25-year civil war and there appears to be a sense of calm not felt in years. But as David Chater reports, hundreds of thousands are still being held in military-guarded camps and many are sceptical the vote can bring any change.
