Southern hip hop, also called Southern rap, is a genre of American music influenced by hip hop that emerged from a late-1980s club-oriented vibe in southern U.S. cities, including Little Rock, New Orleans, Shreveport, Houston, Dallas, Nashville, Atlanta, Charleston, Memphis, Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, Birmingham, Mobile, Orlando, Tampa, Miami, Jacksonville, Jackson, and Baton Rouge. The music was a reaction to the 1980s flow of hip hop culture from New York City and California, and can be considered a third major American hip hop genre, after East Coast hip hop and West Coast hip hop. Many early Southern rap artists released their music independently or on mixtapes after encountering difficulty securing record-label contracts in the 1990s.

Members Cee-Lo (Thomas Callaway), Khujo (Willie Knighton, Jr.), T-Mo Goodie (Robert Barnett), and Big Gipp (Cameron Gipp) make up the group, which has been functioning since 1995. The act's name acts as a double backcronym. As explained on the track "Fighting" on Soul Food, Goodie Mob means "the GOOD DIE Mostly Over Bullshit". Its members were all born in Atlanta, and the group is based there with the rest of the Dungeon Family, a collective which includes OutKast and PA (Parental Advisory). Goodie was first heard featured on several songs from OutKast's first album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. 4.35 min. | 4.95 user rating		 Joe Tex, who was born Joseph Arrington Jr. and was later known as Yusuf Hazziez following religious conversion, was an American Southern soul singer-songwriter, most popular during the 1960s and 1970s. His style of speaking over music, which he called 'rap', made him a predecessor of the modern hip-hop style of music. Although early releases showed promise, it was not until 1965 that Tex prospered, guided by Nashville record producer Buddy Killen. Recorded at the FAME studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and distributed by Atlantic on Killen's Dial record label, "Hold What You've Got" was a US #5 pop hit. Others followed, namely "A Woman Can Change A Man", and "The Love You Save (May Be Your Own)" which were both slow ballads. But a change in tempo also brought hits such as 1966's "SYSLJFM (The Letter Song)" and 1967's "Show Me". Tex's recording career was distinguished by his extensive single releases. For example, in 1965 alone, Tex released seven singles, followed by six in 1966 and five in 1967. He had released over thirty singles prior to the release of his first album, in 1965. Meanwhile the singles "Skinny Legs And All" and "Men Are Getting Scarce" also became major hits for Tex, but the singer seemed unsure of his future direction. His last major hit of that time was "I Gotcha" in 1972, and it was then that he decided to retire.
