All of Astaire's numbers were directed by Vincente Minnelli. Here's To The Girls/Bring On The Wonderful Men: by Roger Edens and Arthur Freed. Sung by Astaire with a short solo dance by Cyd Charisse, followed by Lucille Ball cracking a whip over eight chorus-girl panthers, and finally Virginia O'Brien spoofs the previous scene by singing "Bring on those Wonderful Men" This Heart of Mine: Classic standard by Harry Warren and Arthur Freed and written specially for Astaire who sings it to Bremer and then leads her in an extravagantly romantic dance of seduction and power-play. The choreography integrates rotating floors, concealed treadmills and swirling dance motifs. Love: Another standard, this time by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane, sung by Lena Horne Limehouse Blues: Conceived as a "dramatic pantomime" with Astaire as a proud but poverty-stricken Chinese labourer whose infatuation with the unattainable Bremer leads to tragedy. Fantastic political thriller directed by Alan J. Pakula (who also directed All The President's Men) starring Warren Beatty in one of his best roles ever. The movie's tagline says it all "There is no conspiracy. Just twelve people dead." When a senator is murdered on the campaign trail, the official conclusion of a commission (not unlike the "Warren Commission" after the assassination of John F. Kennedy) is, that this was the work of a lone gunman. Yet, three years after the assassination, Joe Frady (Warren Beatty) is visited by his ex-girlfriend and fellow reporter (Paula Prentiss) with an update on how many of those who witnessed the senator's murder, died before their time as well. Initially, Frady is skeptic. Yet, when his ex ends up on a slab at the morgue not long after visiting him, he sets out on his own investigation. Other co-stars are Hume Cronyn, excellent as always, William Daniels (who also starred with Beatty in Reds), Kenneth Mars and Walter McGinn (who also starred in a similarly paranoid thriller "Three Days of the Condor") as the representative of the mysterious Parallax Corporation. In this scene Joe (Beatty) is bailed out by his chief editor (Cronyn) after having been arrested on phony charges by the police.

LIFEBOAT (1944) In typical fashion, director Alfred Hitchcock fashioned an a-typical war story about a group of survivors of a German U boat sinking in his 1944 masterpiece, LIFEBOAT starring the remarkable Tallulah Bankhead. Shot in one location, aboard a lifeboat stranded in the mid-Atlantic and working from an original screenplay by John Steinbeck, Hitchcock assembled an international cast which included veteran character actors Walter Slezak, Henry Hull, William Bendix, Hume Cronyn, Heather Angel and Canada Lee. As the leading man to Miss Bankhead, Hitchcock cast rugged and handsome John Hodiak. Dousing them all with endless gallons of water, Hitchcock set about making a suspense filled saga of survival, where the weak are shown to be the strongest and the strong give way to their weaknesses. Never one to take the easy road, Hitchcock drew severe criticism from the press for having Slezak, as the Nazi officer, who's rescued by the castaways, be the smartest one in the boat as well as showing the human side of the enemy and the sinister side of the allies. The direction is taut, the performances by everyone are first rate and Bankhead, is outstanding in a role that would earn her The New York Film Critics Award as Best Actress. A role that makes one wish she'd been cast in films more often. LIFEBOAT is unusual for Hitchcock and as with all his films, the art of movie making at its very best.

First of all, my apologies for the quality but I had to record it straight from the TV since I don't have the tools to capture video. This is probably the most touching movie I have ever seen. If you have the chance to watch this, please do not let it go - you won't regret it. This is my tribute to this wonderful movie, which unfortunately seems to be forgotten these days. Hopefully one day we will see a DVD release including nice bonuses.
