Elko County is a county located in the U.S. state of Nevada. As of the 2000 census, the population was 45,291. As of July 1, 2007, the population of Elko County was estimated at 50,434. Its county seat is Elko . The county was established on March 5, 1869, from Lander County. Elko County is the fourth-largest county in the contiguous United States, ranking lower when the boroughs of Alaska are included.

Elko County is part of the Elko micropolitan area.

The attempted demolition of over 100 sticks of VERY old dynamite from an old railroad lined root cellar in Montello Nevada did not go as planned. More than a case of dynamite was found locked in an old metal box in a root cellar in Montello Nevada Oct. 11 2008. The NDF and Elko County Bomb Squad decided to explode the dynamite in place in the cellar. The Blast sent dirt, rocks, sand, and old railroad ties like torpedoes hundreds of feet into the air and over several city blocks. The railroad ties were propelled like tooth picks through the roof of a new modular home, old school bus, and many other locations. The explosion also took out phone and power lines, broke windows, and damaged a carport and other buildings while covering several city blocks with a thick layer of sand and dust. The dynamite blast could be seen for more than 40 miles.
