The Eisenhower Tunnel, officially the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel, is a dual-bore, four-lane vehicular tunnel approximately 60 mi (96.6 km) west of Denver, Colorado, United States. The tunnel carries Interstate 70 under the Continental Divide in the Rocky Mountains. With a maximum elevation of 11158 ft (3401 m) above sea level, it is one of the highest vehicular tunnels in the world. The tunnel is the longest mountain tunnel and highest point on the Interstate Highway system. Completed in 1979, it was one of the last major pieces of the Interstate Highway system to be completed. Video taken while travelling on Interstate freeway I-70 through the West bound Eisenhower Tunnel while travelling to Utah and Eastbound through the Johnson Tunnel when returning from Utah. The Johnson Tunnel is 1.697 miles long and the Eisenhower tunnel is 1.693 miles long, both of which pass through the United States Continental divide up at around 11112 feet above sea level high up in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. This video was taken with a Sony DSC-H2 digital still camera in MPEG movie mode. I had the light exposure level a bit on the low side on the camera and I apologize for that and have attempted to correct it as best as I could. The Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel is located approximately sixty miles west of Denver, Colorado on Interstate 70. It is the highest vehicular tunnel in the world, located at an elevation of 11013 feet at the East Portal and 11158 feet at the West Portal. The Tunnel traverses through the Continental Divide at an average elevation of 11112 feet. The facility lies entirely within the Arapaho National Forest and is divided by two counties, Clear Creek County at the East portal and Summit county at the West portal. The Tunnel and the Continental Divide also separate two watersheds, the Clear Creek Watershed located on the east side and the Straight Creek Watershed located on the west side. Annual snow fall in the area averages 315 inches (26 feet) for the months of November through April. The Tunnel was originally designed as a twin bore tunnel. Construction on the westbound bore (North Tunnel) began March 15, 1968 and was completed five years later on March 8, 1973. This bore was originally called the Straight Creek Tunnel, and later was officially named the Eisenhower Memorial Bore. Construction on the second bore began August 18, 1975 and was completed four years later on December 21, 1979. This eastbound bore was named after Edwin C. Johnson, a past Governor and US Senator who had actively supported an interstate highway system across Colorado. Centerline to centerline, the two tunnels are approximately 115 feet apart at the east ventilation building entrance, 120 feet apart ...

This particular video is of the Eisenhower tunnel heading west to Glenwood Springs. I have another video where I'm east bound, for Denver, going through the Johnson portion of the paired tunnels... As a teenager my family moved to Colorado in 1972 - well before the first tunnel, officially known as the "Eisenhower Memorial Bore" was completed in 1973. The Eisenhower Tunnel, as us locals call it, was a HUGE time saver in that we didn't have to go over Loveland Pass anymore for skiing or travels out west. Since then, I've transited both tunnels (the east bound Edwin C. Johnson tunnel was completed in 1979) a few hundred times for skiing, climbing, vacations, and business trips to Glenwood Springs and other points west. So, for the 35 years I've been using the tunnels I've been taking 'em for granted until now. Now, of course, gasoline is at about $2.60 per gallon and promising to go higher as oil continues at over $71 a barrel. So I don't think I'll be driving through this tunnel as much as in the past and thought these video might make for some nice tunnel memories... Here are some quick facts: The tunnels are at an average elevation of 11112 feet (3387 metres) with a length of 1.6 miles (2.6 km). Total construction cost, at the time, was $108 million. In 2002 over ten million vehicles traveled through the tunnel! Here's my personal web page about my home and the state I love most, Colorado! www.rogerwendell.com 08-08-2009
