The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is a federal law enforcement agency under the United States Department of Justice, tasked with combating drug smuggling and use within the United States. Not only is the DEA the lead agency for domestic enforcement of the Controlled Substances Act, sharing concurrent jurisdiction with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, it also has sole responsibility for coordinating and pursuing U.S. drug investigations abroad.

ATLANTA (AP) - Federal drug enforcement officials say they've seized millions of dollars from Mexican cartel members operating in Atlanta. Authorities say some of that money will go to help Georgia law enforcement agencies. Drug Enforcement Agency Special Agent Rodney Benson says Operation Four Horsemen resulted in the seizure of $23.8 million and more than 500 kilograms of cocaine. Benson says 23 cartel members have been arrested, including two brothers accused of running drugs along the East Coast. Authorities say $8 million will be divided among agencies that provided key help in the investigation - the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia Department of Public Safety, Lawrenceville Police Department, Henry County Sheriff's Office and the Troup County Sheriff's Office.

Tom Angell, media relations director for Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, asks White House "Drug Czar" Gil Kerlikowske what he thinks of all the recent discussion on drug legalization. Any citizen can join LEAP at www.CopsSayLegalizeDrugs.com I am Tom Angell with Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. Director Kerlikowske you said that the idea of legalizing drugs is of the charts for discussion. But in recent weeks a number of serious people like Senator Jim Webb, former Mexican President Vicente Fox and the current Mexican ambassador of the United States have all said that legalization is a serious idea worth serious consideration. And even on page one of the UNODC report up today Mr. Costa devotes significant space to discussing the arguments for legalizing drugs. Do you think that this recent discussion is dangerous and should be discouraged or do you think under the Obama administration in this era scientifically all options really should be on the table for consideration before we decide to a new way to move forward? Sure we are a country of free speech and so I think the last thing that anyone in the administration would do would be to suppress free speech in that discussion. As regards to legalization it is not in the President's vocabulary and it is not in mine.

The fight against illegal narcotics trafficking in the United States is the responsibility of the Drug Enforcement Administration, known as the DEA. Agents often work undercover, requiring both male and female agents, yet less than 10 percent are women. As VOA's Greg Flakus reports from Houston, the agency is trying to change that.
