The United States Marshals Service (USMS) is a United States federal law enforcement agency within the United States Department of Justice (see ). The office of U.S. Marshal is the oldest federal law enforcement office in the United States created by the Judiciary Act of 1789. It assumed its current name in 1969.

The Marshals Service is part of the executive branch of government, and is the enforcement arm of the United States federal courts. The U.S. Marshals are responsible for the protection of court officers and buildings and the effective operation of the judiciary. The service also assists with court security and prisoner transport, serves arrest warrants, and seeks fugitives.

When it came to auctioning off the belongings of Frank DiPascali, the disgraced former chief financial officer behind Bernie Madoff's $65 billion Ponzi scheme, the US Marshal's Service did things a little differently. In order to retain as much money to compensate Madoff's victims, the US Marshals Service held the auction themselves, even using Deputy US Marshal Patrick Higgins as the auctioneer. A garage loaned by the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy, in Morris Plains, was a humble storage for DiPascali's gilded ill-gotten gains, but it drew hundreds of people nonetheless. Among the items seized from DiPascali's Bridgewater home and snatched up at the auction: a Lord of the Rings pinball machine and other arcade games, poker tables, a leopard-print chaise longue, and a home cinema set, with reclining leather chairs and a carnival-style popcorn maker. DiPascali , who last year pleaded guilty to conspiracy and fraud, was released on $10 million bail this week. The auction raised $63850. (Video by Nyier Abdou/The Star-Ledger)
