Robert Williams, then covering the news for Charlotte media outlets, named him "Knobby," a towering beast many considered as the resident Bigfoot. Williams never saw Knobby — "I only wrote what I was told." Knobby stories flew overseas, Williams said, drawing interest from New Zealand and beyond. Newspaper articles from 1979 detail more than a dozen Knobby sightings and investigations by the North American Research Association and researchers from a university in Massachusetts. But the rumors and sightings near Carpenter's Knob — hence the creature's name — mysteriously stopped decades ago. Then, Timothy Peeler called 911... Full story: www.shelbystar.com

'It's the truth' : Tim Peeler speaks on spotting sasquatch, national attention and more CASAR — His "rough talking" made it onto late-night television. And his drawings were reported in Romania. But Tim Peeler doesn't want the limelight. "It sort of scares me in a way," said Peeler, who reported a Bigfoot sighting outside his Vanada Drive home earlier this month. "It sort of worries me. But it will die down. It'll play out." Peeler called 911 June 5 when he supposedly spotted a sasquatch messing around near South Mountain. The story, first broke by The Star, spread to CNN, AOL, MSNBC and beyond. The national attention spawned a Bigfoot-inspired sandwich, t-shirts and more. Peeler still recalls that night — the creature's "beautiful hair" — and the mystery still surrounding it. "I didn't know whether he wanted to (hurt) my dog or kill it or what," he said. "That's why I called 911. He came twice. I feared for my little dog's life." Peeler's account to authorities made international headlines. He's since become an online celebrity of sorts, gaining thousands of video views on YouTube. "I can't help it," Peeler continued. "It just got out of control." But Peeler said the incident hasn't been blown out of proportion. Far from it. "No, it's the truth. It just spread so I can't believe it." But some people do believe. Peeler recently welcomed visitors from Alabama, who sought information on the legendary beast locally known as "Knobby." "They were working for a man out of ...
