The club's greatest success came in the late 70's and all of the 80's, when they won 4 national championship titles. This era was known as the 'green era' in their history. The club managed to attract many local fans from Muharraq and around Bahrain, many of whom were bored of the Al-Ahli and Al-Muharraq duopoly that was seen throughout Bahrain's football history, most notably during the 60's. The club tried its best to recreate the same breath of new fresh air in modern times but failed to do so as Al-Riffa sports club became the new competitor to Al-Muharraq's reign, while both Bahrain club and Al-Ahli club disappeared into history books. The club's pinnacle of triumph came in the late 80's, after they secured a fourth title in 2 decades and a fifth title in their whole history. At this period of time, Bahrain club was seen as the alternative team to support from the local Muharraq natives' point of view. However, their likeness for Al-Muharraq club still bore more weight than the green counterparts. The best summary to Bahrain's rise and downfall in its golden 80's era was in 1988, when a local female supporter of the team attended a training session that was open to public while she was wearing a green spandex unitard that fully encompassed her body, except for the face and neck. The lady was a well-known Bahraini aerobics instructor back in the 1980's and had her own aerobics shows in several television channels. She made a notorious public appearance in Bahrain club's training pitch while dressed in a green, full-body & skintight spandex catsuit with pink-and-white striped knee high socks. This became a widespread news across the island and symbolized the team's stature as a popular name in Bahrain's society back in the 80's. On April 20th 2007 at a local league match between Al-Muharraq and Bahrain, Al-Muharraq crushed Bahrain 6-0. During the last few minutes of the game, it was reported that a supporter of Al-Muharraq took out a green unitard from his bag and started ripping it apart as a message of victory over their island rivals. A new trend among Muharraq football fans is to rip green unitards and then burn them in a safe place after winning against Bahrain football club. The trend picked up with the young supporters and is known as 'green skinning' or 'سلخ الخضر' in Arabic. |
