UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman is in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for a five-day visit to assess the situation of women and children amidst what is widely seen as Africa's worst humanitarian crisis. Here is one in a series of related reports. KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 26 August 2009 As this country tries to recover from years of civil war and unrest, the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital (BMMH) offers hope in an impoverished Kinshasa neighbourhood. VIDEO: Watch now Mutombo Hospital, opened in 2007, aims to be a model for the rebuilding of a national medical system in DR Congo, where the collapse of the health care infrastructure has left millions vulnerable to a multitude of illnesses that are easily preventable in much of the developed world. We have suffered a lot, says Dikembe Mutombo, the Congolese-American basketball legend whose foundation built the hospital named in memory of his mother. The civil unrest in the country has destroyed the fabric of our society when it comes to the health care system, he added. To read the full story, visit www.unicef.org

MaximsNewsNetwork: 11 November 2009 - UNICEF: According to a new UNICEF report, the number of malnourished people worldwide has surpassed one billion and is a factor in one third of all under five deaths. UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman visits Mali, where one in five children do not survive to see their fifth birthday. Mali, a country bisected by the vast and ever-growing Sahara desert would seem a likely candidate for food shortages and starvation, yet the streets of Bamako, the capital, are chock-full-of-fruit and vegetable stalls and animal markets. Still, malnutrition rates have reached unacceptable levels. A combination of soaring food prices and high levels of poverty mean that although food is plenty, it doesnt always reach those in need. This, coupled with low levels of breast-feeding in infants, extremely low use of primary health care services and cultural confusion, has led to emergency level malnutrition rates in the country. Health Centre 1 in Bamako receives referrals from the surrounding districts; its malnutrition ward is full. SOUNDBITE (French) Dr. Habibata Traoré, pediatric doctor: We get children in different conditions, some cant eat, some are hyper sensitive, some are not cognitive and need to be put on feeding tubes. One-year-old Abdoulaye was one of those cases, he refused to breastfeed and then began to suffer from diarrhea. But it was only when he grew too weak to sit and too weak to lift his head, that his mother brought him in, three ...

MUSINA, South Africa, 22 January 2009 A humanitarian crisis is unfolding in the South African border town of Musina. Historically the transit point for migrants seeking work in the countrys larger cities, it has now become the entry point for many desperate Zimbabweans fleeing the economic and social collapse in their country. UNICEF Executive Director Ann Veneman recently visited the area, touring the towns showgrounds, the first stop for many who cross the border seeking asylum. With 300 permits granted a day, the facility has become a makeshift camp for thousands of waiting migrants. On our visit we have been looking at the issue of people coming in from Zimbabwe, waiting for their papers, Ms. Veneman said after being briefed by the local authorities and speaking with asylum seekers. Weve had a chance to talk to many of the mothers who have children here about why theyre coming here, and its looking for a better life. With support from UNICEF, Save the Children has set up a safe space in Musina for mothers with young children. It provides them with food, toys and a place to wait while their papers are processed by the Ministry of Home Affairs. To read the full story, visit: www.unicef.org

NEW YORK, USA, 13 January 2010 The first shipment of UNICEF supplies for survivors of yesterdays devastating earthquake is on its way to Haiti. The emergency aid is urgently needed, as basic services and infrastructure in the western hemispheres poorest nation were already close to collapse even before the 7.0-magnitude quake struck. Meanwhile, in a statement to UNICEFs Executive Board, which is meeting in New York this week, Executive Director Ann M. Veneman reaffirmed the agencys determination to respond effectively to the crisis in Haiti despite the many challenges ahead. "Expert estimates suggest that 46 per cent of Haitis nearly 10 million people are under 18 years of age, she said. The special needs of children for food, shelter and protection must be factored in at the very outset of relief efforts, and UNICEF will do everything in its power to make sure these needs are met.

ALMATY, Kazakhstan, 15 October 2008 At the global health conference marking the 30th anniversary of the Alma-Ata Declaration on primary health care, UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman said that health systems had to be scaled up through dynamic collaboration among governments, international partners, non-governmental organizations and the private sector. Veneman said combating disease and improving health in developing countries is being enhanced by new technologies, service-delivery mechanisms and partnerships. In 1978, the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF jointly hosted a conference in Kazakhstan that resulted in the Alma-Ata Declaration in which primary health care was defined by leaders as ensuring that everyone, regardless of where they lived, whether rich or poor, was able to access services and conditions necessary for realizing the best possible health. www.unicef.org PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, 5 February 2010 UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman visited the Haitian capital yesterday, meeting with UNICEF staff, government leaders and survivors of the massive earthquake that struck here on 12 January. At a makeshift shelter in downtown Port-au-Prince where UNICEF and partners are delivering food, safe water and basic health services Veneman noted that the vast scale of damage to Haiti's already fragile infrastructure makes relief work extremely difficult. But she lauded the results achieved thus far in reaching quake-affected children and families with life-saving assistance. "It was really encouraging to see that humanitarian supplies are getting to those who need them the most, especially women and children," said Veneman.
