Allied Irish Banks p.l.c. (AIB) is a major commercial bank based in Ireland. In December 2010 the Irish government effectively nationalised the entity and it became a government institution. AIB is one of the so called Big Four commercial banks in Ireland. The bank has one of the largest branch networks in Ireland; only Bank of Ireland fully rivals it. AIB offers a full range of personal and corporate banking services. AIB Capital Markets is the division of the company that offers international banking and treasury operations. The bank also offers a range of general insurance products such as home, travel, and health insurance. It offers life assurance and pensions through its wholly owned subsidiary, Ark Life Assurance.

AIB shares formerly traded on the Irish Stock Exchange, and the London Stock Exchange, and an ADR traded on the New York Stock Exchange. AIB was delisted from these exchanges following its effective nationalisation, and remaining publicly-traded shares of AIB are now listed on the Enterprise Securities Market of the Irish Stock Exchange .

Internationally, AIB operates mainly in the United Kingdom (as Allied Irish Bank (GB) and First Trust Bank in Northern Ireland), and Poland (as BZ-WBK). In November 2010, it sold its 22.5% stake in M&T Bank in the United States. At the beginning of 2008 AIB entered the Latvian, Estonian and Lithuanian markets by acquiring AmCredit mortgage finance business from the Baltic American Enterprise Fund. Allied Irish Banks along with their competitor Bank of Ireland, accepted 3.5 billion euro from the government of the Republic of Ireland as a part of the Bank Recapitalisation scheme, in 2009.

Allied Irish Banks Video

A short Irish music video commenting on the collapse of the Irish banks and the subsequent IMF-EU bailout of Ireland. The instrumental music is for piano and B-flat trumpet and composed by Deirdre Ryan. The sudden and spectacular crash of "CelticTiger" Ireland has its origins in the greed-driven policies of fairly recent Irish political leaders, and my intention was to convey something of this as well as to depict some of the desperate consequences of the crash itself. The shots are of various Irish government buildings and banks HQ in Dublin city, including the NAMA building by the Grand Canal (with its "Inspiration" figure clinging to the wall) and the Allied Irish Banks Group HQ in Ballsbridge, with its wonderful, prescient sculpture of a mad, aggressive hare... Later shots are of some ghost estates within "commuting" distance of Dublin city, and of the beautiful National Garden of Remembrance in Parnell Square and Merrion Strand - both well worth a quiet, solitary visit.... I think the video makes for a pretty sad comment on contemporary Ireland, but there also comes a time to leave despair behind and to focus on building a better, fairer future. Not sure from where the ideas will come, but one credible, hopeful vision is being offerered at www.fintanotoole.ie.

MANY TIMES I HAVE BEEN POSED THE QUESTION - REGARDING IRELAND'S PRESENT CRISIS . WELL - WHAT WOULD YOU DO ? HOW WOULD YOU RESOLVE THIS CRISIS ? FIRSTLY , IN ORDER TO DO ANYTHING AT ALL - YOU NEED POLITICAL POWER . I DO NOT HAVE SUCH POWER . THE REASON WE THE IRISH PEOPLE , ARE IN SUCH A MAJOR DILEMMA IS BECAUSE THOSE WHO WERE & ARE IN POWER HAVE BETRAYED THEIR SOVEREIGNTY & GIVEN IT OVER ENTIRELY TO CORPORATE & ELITIST INTERESTS. THEY HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST IN THE WELL BEING OF THE MAJORITY OF THOSE WHO VOTED THEM INTO POWER . THE WORKING CLASS & THE MIDDLE CLASS . SO FAR WE HAVE POURED 24 BILLION EUROS INTO THE ' BLACK HOLE ' THAT IS ANGLO IRISH BANK . WE HAVE ALSO PUT AT LEAST ANOTHER 15 BILLION EUROS INTO AIB , Bank of Ireland , IL& P etc. NOT FORGETTING THE 54 BILLION EUROS WE HAVE BORROWED FOR NAMA. ALL OF THIS IS A RECIPE FOR DISASTER . EVEN AN IDIOT WOULD REALISE THIS. WE MUST STOP ALL THIS MADNESS NOW --- IMMEDIATELY. NO MORE MONEY INTO INSOLVENT & BANKRUPT BANKS . WE SHOULD START A SMALL NUMBER OF ' NEW ' BANKS - SPECIFICALLY AIMED AT FRESH START UP BUSINESSES & INCREASING EMPLOYMENT IN EXPORT DRIVEN BUSINESS . WE SHOULD ALSO BE LOOKING AT A TEN YEAR CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN BASED AROUND HARBOURS , AIRPORTS & NATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE . ALL OF THIS WOULD BE DISTINCTLY POSSIBLE IF WE WERE NOT THROWING IN THE REGION OF 50 BILLION EUROS INTO A DEFUNCT BANKING SYSTEM.
