The convention took place less than a year after President Kennedy's assassination. On the last day of the convention Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy introduced a short film in honor of his brother's memory. Appearing on the convention floor, Kennedy received 22 minutes of uninterrupted applause, causing him to nearly break into tears. Speaking about his brother's vision for the country, Robert Kennedy famously quoted from Romeo & Juliet: [...] and when [he] shall die Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night And pay no worship to the garish sun. Ambassador to the United Nations Adlai E. Stevenson introduced a memorial film the same day for former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who had died on November 7, 1962. |
