Harlem in Montmartre: Notes on the French Contribution to Jazz THE NEW SCHOOL | www.newschool.edu Charles Hobson, producer of the PBS Great Performances program Harlem in Montmartre, brings to The New School the story of the jazz age in Paris between the First and Second World Wars, a fascinating but neglected piece of African American history. Inspired by William A. Shacks book of the same title, his documentary contains rare archival performance footage of James Europe, Josephine Baker, Sidney Bechet, Bricktop, Eugene Bullard, Django Reinhardt, and many more. Using photographs and film clips from the 1920s and 30s, Mr. Hobson discusses his film and the extraordinary role played by French artists and intellectuals in advancing the acceptance of jazz as a serious art form. Fridays @ One is supported by a bequest in memory of Estelle Tolkin. Sponsored by the Institute for Retired Professionals | http * Location: Theresa Lang Community and Student Center, Arnhold Hall, 55 West 13th Street, 2nd floor. 02/19/2010 1:00 pm

William Mathias: Concerto for harp & orchestra, Op 50 - movement 1. Isaiah Jackson / English Chamber Orchestra / Ann Hobson Pilot, harp. This piece gives me the mental images of a busy enchanted microcosm, hence the accompanying microscopic photography. Join me in an inward journey to the very small. From the Wikipedia article: Mathias was born in Whitland, Carmarthenshire. A child prodigy, he started playing the piano at the age of three and composing at the age of five. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music under Lennox Berkeley, where he was elected a fellow in 1965. In 1968, he received the Bax Society Prize of the Harriet Cohen International Music Award. He was professor of music and head of department at the University of Wales, Bangor, from 1970 until 1988. "His compositions include large scale works, including an opera, The Servants (1980), three symphonies and three piano concertos. Much of his music was written for the Anglican choral tradition, most famously the anthem Let the people praise Thee, O God written for the July 1981 royal wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales, which had a television audience of an estimated 1 billion people worldwide. "Mathias wrote his Sinfonietta -- initially called Dance Suite -- for the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra in late 1966, and it received its first performance at Leicester De Montfort Hall during the 1967 Schools Festival. It was also included in the orchestra's tour programme for Denmark and Germany ...

An American Cantata for Baritone, Chorus and Orchestra Ricardo Herrera, baritone University of Illinois Chorale & Oratorio Society/Sinfonia da Camera conducted by Ian Hobson from Albany TROY1280 www.albanyrecords.com World premiere recording of one of 20th century America's most important composers. The four compositions on this disc effectively portray both sides of William Schuman's musical personality â from the spirited energy of American Festival Overture and the uninhibited patriotic fervor of A Free Song to the much darker character of Prelude and the profoundly moving On Freedom's Ground. One of the 20th century America's most important composers and arts administrators, William Schuman (1910-1992) went from being a Tin Pan Alley song plugger to professor at Sarah Lawrence to president of Juilliard and finally, to president of Lincoln Center. With the exception of the oft-recorded American Festival Overture, these are world premiere recordings and represent the many sides of this extraordinarily creative musical mind. Joseph Polisi, the current president of Juilliard and author of American Muse The Life and Times of William Schuman has provided the notes. Contents: William Schuman, composer American Festival Overture Sinfonia da Camera, Ian Hobson, conductor William Schuman, composer A Free Song Richardo Herrera, baritone, University of Illinois Chorale & Oratoria Society, Sinfonia da Camera, Ian Hobson, conductor William Schuman, composer Prelude for Full Chorus ...
