John George Diefenbaker (born Sept. 18, 1895, Grey county, Ont., Can. — died Aug. 16, 1979, Ottawa) Prime minister of Canada (1957 -- 63). After serving in World War I, he practiced law in Saskatchewan. His law office was located in Wakaw Saskatchewan. He was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in 1940. He became leader of the Progressive Conservative Party in 1956 and served as prime minister from 1957 to 1963, when his party lost its majority in the House of Commons. He resigned as party leader in 1967. He was chancellor of the University of Saskatchewan from 1969 until his death. John Diefenbaker was born in Ontario but his boyhood and most of his life was spent in Saskatchewan. In his politics he exemplified the conservative populist loyalism of the prairie provinces. Educated at the University of Saskatchewan, he served with the Canadian army in France (1916 -- 17) but was invalided home, and called to the Saskatchewan bar in 1919. After building up a considerable and lucrative law practice, he entered Canada's House of Commons in 1940 for Lake Centre, Saskatchewan, and became leader of the Progressive Conservatives in December 1956. In June 1957 he became Prime Minister of Canada, forming a minority government, when the Liberal Party was defeated after twenty-two years in office. The Canadian Bill of Rights is a federal statute and bill of rights enacted by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker's government on August 10, 1960.
