Johann Paul Dresser, Jr. (April 22, 1857 January 31, 1906) was a popular American songwriter of the late 19th century and early 20th century. As a child and adolescent he was frequently in trouble and spent several months in jail before joining a band of traveling minstrels. He grew in fame and began performing in several regional theaters before joining John Hamlin's traveling show in 1878. He continued traveling nationally with a number of different acts, eventually joining The Tin Soldier in 1890. There he began writing many prominently featured songs, but after disputes with the show’s manager, Charles Hoyt, he began publishing his music independently.

Starting a partnership with New York City's Tin Pan Alley music firms, he began composing songs which included some that became amongst the most popular of his time. The most famous of these was "On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away", which became the second best-selling song, in terms of sheet music, during the nineteenth century. He became very wealthy from his business and works, but quickly fell into financial distress at the turn of the century as his genre fell out of style and his income dropped, a situation exacerbated because of his overspending. His business failed and he declared bankruptcy in 1905. He died the following year.

This performance of this 19th Century American popular music standard by all four of the Nelsons, Ozzie, Harriet, David and Ricky, is from the April 10, 1957 broadcast of the episode, Ricky, The Drummer, from the TV show The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet. One of the most important composers of the 1890's, Paul Dresser was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on April 21, 1859, just before the beginning of the Civil War. As a boy, Dresser studied at St. Meinrad's in Switz City, in training for priesthood. By age 16, he joined a medicine show in Indianapolis and toured in vaudeville as a singer and monologist. In the late 1880's, Dresser moved to New York City and found work in the Billy Rice Minstrels and was a founding member of the music-publishing firm Howley, Haviland & Dresser. As a songwriter, Dresser relied heavily on the sentimental themes of home, boyhood, mother, patriotism, and romance. By the late 1890's, he was one of the most successful songwriters producing such hits as "Wide Wings", "The Letter That Never Came", "My Gal Sal", "On the Banks of the Wabash" (which became Indiana's state song), "The Blue and the Gray", "Just Tell Them That you Saw Me", "Once Ev'ry Year", "The Curse of the Dreamer", "The Pardon Came too Late", "Don't Tell Her That You Love Her", "Your Mother Wants You Home Boy", "Bethlehem", "Mr. Volunteer", "I Was Looking for My Boy, She Said." He composed and published his more than 100 songs, 25 of which hit the Billboard top twenty. Paul Dresser <b>...</b>

This is the original song written by Paul Dresser in 1893. It was the "special song" for the Houdinis... it was the song Bess was singing when they first met. Harry sings this when his wife is upset about something.

An old standard by Paul Dresser from 1905. Words:: They called her frivolous Sal A peculiar sort of a gal With a heart that was mellow An all round good fellow was my old pal. Your troubles, sorrows and care She was always willing to share A wild sort of devil, but dead on the level was my gal sal.

According to wikipedia -- "On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away" was among the best-selling songs of the 19th century in terms of sheet music sold. Written and composed by American songwriter Paul Dresser, it was published by the Tin Pan Alley firm of Howley, Haviland & Co. in October 1897. The lyrics of the ballad reminisce about life near Dresser's childhood home by the Wabash River in Indiana. It remained popular for decades and the Indiana General Assembly adopted it as the official state song on March 14, 1913. The song was the basis for a 1923 film by the same title. Its longtime popularity led to the emergence of several different lyrical versions, including an 1898 anti-war song and a Swedish version that was a number one hit."

After class I headed over to Arden Hills to catch an empty Dresser Turn. The power for it is Soo SD60 6036, ICE SD40-3 6426, and CITX SD40-2 2794 (Former DRGW SD45). In addition to such a neat lashup, the entire train was made up of 60 Herzog hoppers. The next day, the train would head down the River Sub via the Saint Paul Sub.
