An excursion run leaving Owosso, Michigan, late in the afternoon on November 28, 2008. The train is pulled by the 800000 pound (including tender) Pere Marquette 1225 locomotive ― the largest operating steam engine locomotive in Michigan. Steven Spielberg's production company filmed the exterior sights and sounds of the 1225 for the computer rendering of the movie, "Polar Express," and Lionel Model Trains has also recorded the sounds of the 1225 for its new electric toy model train, "The 1225" ― the namesake of Owosso's 1225. Owosso, Michigan, is the headquarters of the Steam Railroading Institute, which includes a museum and other facilities. The institute's 3.5 acre grounds also hold a roundhouse, the Pere Marquette 1225, the 82000 pound Flagg Coal Company steam switch engine, the 136000 pound Mississippian steam locomotive (under restoration), plus many train cars and other rolling stock from railroads in the United States and Canada. The Owosso-based Steam Railroading Institute was the location of TrainFestival 2009, which was celebrated from July 24th thru July 26th, 2009. The festival drew approximately 36000 visitors to Owosso from around the world. On display were additional steam-era equipment, including the 1225's sister steam locomotive - Nickel Plate Road's 765 - and The Southern Pacific Number 4449: The Daylight. Owosso, Michigan, is also the headquarters of the Great Lakes Central Railroad, which provides freight service to Northern and Southern Michigan, and ...

Still lettered for the movie in which it starred (partially), Pere Marquette 1225 is presented here during an excursion from Owosso to Cadillac, Michigan in 2005. The big 2-8-4 is a classic example of a Lima Locomotive Works Super Power steam locomotive.

One of the jewels of the Owosso, Michigan-based Steam Railroading Institute: the 1225 steam engine locomotive and tender - weighing in at 800000 pounds - more than the maximum takeoff weights of one B-52 bomber and eight F-16 fighters combined. In this video, you are initially looking southeast. The smoke from the 1225 can first be seen as the train weaves its way into the Westown district of Owosso. As the train turns the corner and heads northwest towards you, it is entering what were yards of the New York Central Railroad. To the left was a freight warehouse and station, and to the right was the massive Owosso Manufacturing Company that later became the Mitchell-Bentley Corporation. As recently as the mid-1950's, the freight yards were full of switches, sidings, rolling stock and both diesel and steam engines. It was at this site in Owosso, the hometown of Thomas E. Dewey, that John F. Kennedy gave one of his memorable, and at times humor-tinged, speeches during the 1960 presidential campaign. Today the old Mitchell-Bentley building and headquarters are long gone; new facilities were built across the street. The freight station, warehouse, switches and sidings have also been removed leaving just one basically north-south track. However, business is booming again. The single track is now owned by the Great Lakes Central Railroad, which is headquartered on the other side of Owosso in facilities that were previously regional maintenence yards of the Ann Arbor Railroad ...

This video was taken at dusk on December 19, 2008, in the Westown area of Owosso, Michigan. You are looking southeast and downtown Owosso, Michigan, begins about a half mile farther east. As the railroad crossing signals turn on, the Steam Railroading Institute's famous Pere Marquette 1225 steam engine locomotive is finishing a rather sharp turn to the northwest. The 1225 very slowly picks up speed as it crosses West Main Street in Owosso and enters what were freight yards of the New York Central Railroad. From there, the 1225 will continue on mostly straight track for a few miles until it turns to the northeast and Chesaning, Michigan. This video is a trailer for a short series of videos covering the SP Daylight #4449 pulling two day long excursion trains from Owosso, Michigan to Alma, Michigan on July 23rd-24th during Trainfest 2009. Be sure to watch all three videos in the series when you're done watching the trailer. If you enjoy what you see, please subscribe! All this footage was shot with the small Ultra HD Flip camera. The three-part series incorporates run-by footage taken from a Sony PMW-EX3 and Panasonic PV-GS39. The video also includes on-board train shots from inside the NYC-3 New York Central private observation office car. This event was particularly special for me because it was the 25th anniversary of my father's and my ride behind 4449 since we rode it together in 1984 on the Louisiana World's Fair Daylight. I was six years old at the time. This time I treated him to a fabulous ride behind "the most beautiful train in the world." Thanks to everyone who made this event possible, and Brent Johnson, Kevin Marcus and Digital Film Studios, Sun Valley, CA. Again, please be sure to my the full-length three part series of Trainfest videos when you're finished watching this. Thanks and enjoy! Charlie Jett ("chjett") Eugene, Oregon charlie.jett77@gmail.com

Owosso, Michigan, is rich in history and historic figures, while also being a leader in innovation and high technologies. A video done almost anywhere in Owosso seems to automatically exemplify this synergy of a great past and dynamic progression into the future. There are over twenty-five railroad crossings within the city limits of Owosso, Michigan, each of which is located in the southern or western areas of the city. This video was shot at the innermost of two West King Street crossings. As the video begins, you will see a tall brown brick building in the distant background. This is the remains of the massive Owosso Sugar Company, which was built in 1903, and which had one of the highest production capacities of all sugar companies in the US It was here where the renowned scientist and inventor, Yasujuro Nikaido, worked as chief chemist, and it was in Owosso where he wrote the book, "Beet-Sugar Making and Its Chemical Control" - a book that has remained a classic in its field since 1909. This largest building of the company, and others on the property, later housed Mid-West Abrasives - a manufacturer of abrasive products including sand papers, WR Fox, Inc. - a designer and builder of convention hall trade show displays, Genesee Stamping - a manufacturer of metal stamped products, as well as other companies. The modern buildings in the foreground are the global headquarters of the rapidly growing Internet accountability company, Covenant Eyes. About two blocks west of ...

In this video the Pere Marquette 1225 is heading west as it crosses South Shiawassee Street in Owosso before it eventually heads north on a roundtrip to Chesaning, Michigan. A couple minutes later, a lone Great Lakes Central Railroad GMTX GATX diesel makes the same crossing on the same track.
