Outotec Oyj (Outokumpu Technology prior to 2007-04-24) is a globally operating company, headquartered in Espoo, Finland, aimed at providing technologies and services for the sustainable use of natural resources. The firm concentrates on developing and delivering technology and service solutions which facilitate the various stages of extractive metallurgy and mineral processing from ore through to refined metal or mineral, including the grinding, flotation, thickening, filtration and physical separation of ores and the primary and secondary smelting and leaching of base and precious metals. Outotec's expertise also covers processing iron ore and ferriferous materials to produce concentrates, pellets, sinter, DRI/HBI, ferroalloys and titanium feedstock. Furthermore, Outotec offers solutions for sulfuric acid production, off-gas handling, alumina refineries, roasting, calcination, biomass processing, oil shale and oil sands processing as well as for industrial water treatment. The deliveries range from feasibility studies to lump sum turnkey plants and include engineering, process equipment, automation, project implementation and management and life cycle services.
Outotec was previously a wholly-owned business area of Outokumpu, having been established in the late 1940s, but it was spun off as a separate entity in October 2006 when the parent company decided to concentrate on the stainless steel business. A listing on the NASDAQ OMX Helsinki stock exchange followed shortly afterwards, and the company was promoted to the benchmark OMX Helsinki 25 as a result of the index's February 2007 reclassification.
