Lego Mindstorms is a line of programmable robotics/construction toys, manufactured by the Lego Group. It comes in a kit containing many pieces including sensors and cables.

Mindstorms originated from the programmable sensor blocks used in the line of educational toys. The first retail version of Lego Mindstorms was released in 1998 and marketed commercially as the Robotics Invention System (RIS). The next version was released in 2006 as Lego Mindstorms NXT. The newest version, released on August 5, 2009, is known as Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0.

The hardware and software roots of the Mindstorms Robotics Invention System kit go back to the programmable brick created at the MIT Media Lab. This brick was programmed in Brick Logo. The first visual programming environment was called LEGOsheets, since it was created by the University of Colorado in 1994 based on AgentSheets.

The original Mindstorms Robotics Invention System kit contained two motors, two touch sensors, and one light sensor. The NXT version has three servo motors and one sensor each for light, sound, and distance as well as 1 touch sensor. The NXT 2.0 has 2 touch sensors as well as light, sound and distance sensors, and support for 4 without using a sensor multiplexor. Lego Mindstorms may be used to build a model of an embedded system with computer-controlled electromechanical parts. Many kinds of real-life embedded systems, from elevator controllers to industrial robots, may be modelled using Mindstorms.

Mindstorms kits are also sold and used as an educational tool, originally through a partnership between Lego and the MIT Media Laboratory. The educational version of the products is called Lego Mindstorms for Schools, and comes with the ROBOLAB GUI-based programming software, developed at Tufts University using the National Instruments LabVIEW as an engine. In addition, the shipped software can be replaced with third party firmware and/or programming languages, including some of the most popular ones used by professionals in the embedded systems industry, like Java and C. The only difference between the educational series, known as the "Challenge Set", and the consumer series, known as the "Inventor Set", is that it includes another light sensor and several more gearing options.

Mindstorms is named after the book Mindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas by Seymour Papert.

The Worlds Fastest Lego Mindstorms RCX Speedcubing Robot. Built entirely from lego elements with a lego web camera to scan the faces of the cube, The solve engine (algorithm) running on the computer is provided by the incredible "Cube Explorer "software which also provides the colour recognition required to determine the exact location of each coloured square. Thanks to Herbert Kociemba for making his work available to anyone wishing to use it! Respect! "Cube Explorer" has the ability to produce very fast solutions to a successfully scanned cube, usually around 20 face turns! Doesn't sound a lot , but it has been proven that 20 turns are enough to solve ANY 3x3x3 cube combination. Special thanks to David Gilday for his assistance with the software interface to "Cube Explorer."

California travel expert Veronica Hill of www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com tours Legoland in California -- just a 2 hour drive from Los Angeles -- in sunny Carlsbad beach. One of the best San Diego attractions, this theme park is located only 7 miles from the Oceanside Amtrak station, making it very accessible from most major California cities. Geared toward children ages 2-10, this Danish amusement park captivates your imagination with its intricately built Lego City and amazing Lego creations made with thousands of Lego bricks. If go during the summer, bring along a spare change of clothes. There are tons of places to get wet, including a great water park and rides like Aquazone, Skipper School and Splash Battle. Our kids loved the Volvo Driving School, which has two tracks geared toward younger and older drivers. For an added fee, children can even get their own drivers license! Parents will appreciate the Model Mom Baby Care Center where you can privately feed your baby, change a diaper or grab a band aid. Next door, kids can try their hand at their own Lego creations in the Lego Club House. Little boys will love the Indiana Jones Lego walkthrough and Lego Star Wars exhibits. You'll want to sign up early to take part in the Lego Mindstorms activities, which almost always sell out by noon. Before you leave, don't miss a stop at Granny's Apple Fries. In my opinion, these fried, cinnamon-dusted treats, slathered with vanilla cream, are the best thing at the park. For ...
