Hypokalaemia (British English), hypopotassemia (ICD-9) or Hypokalemia (American English) refers to the condition in which the concentration of potassium (K+) in the blood is low. The prefix hypo- means "under" (contrast with hyper-, meaning "over"); kal- refers to kalium, the Neo-Latin for potassium, and -emia means "condition of the blood."

Normal serum potassium levels are between 3.5 to 5.0 mEq/L; at least 95% of the body's potassium is found inside cells, with the remainder in the blood. This concentration gradient is maintained principally by the Na+/K+ pump.

One of my good friends on the Atkins Diet, Izaboutime, talked to me regarding a scare he had. He was following the diet religiously and working out fiendishly in the gym. In that time, he sweated the potassium of his body and put himself into a hypokalemic state. He thought he was having a heart attack. The post script to his tale is he found out what it was and wanted to be sure others knew as well. That was why this video was created. Hypokalemia health.google.com www.nlm.nih.gov en.wikipedia.org What is Potassium Good for? * important for neuron (brain and nerve) functioning * maintaining osmotic and pH balance - electrolyte * fluid balance * heart, kidney and adrenal functions * preventing muscle contraction Recommended daily intake of over 4-5000mg. Is it a common problem? Biochemical abnormalities of the ketogenic diet in children. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov This study discovered serum levels of sodium, potassium, and calcium were similarly unaltered in humans consuming a ketogenic diet. What causes a hypokalemia? * Diuretics, Stimulant Laxatives or Eating Disorders (Bulimia) * Excessive Sweating / Extreme exercise * Diarrhea * Diseases that affect the kidney's ability to retain potassium (for example, Cushing syndrome) * Surgical procedures to shorten the intestines where Potassium is absorbed * Extremely rarely poor diet In the case of Atkins or most diets, the initial state is diuretic with the loss of glycogen which can temporarily influence electrolyte levels. Self help and self care for the damage vomiting does to your body including potassium deficiency, tooth decay, burst blood vessels, dizziness, acid reflux and an irregular heartbeat. Remember, none of this will protect you from the long term damage bulimia does to your body: heart attack, stomach ulcers, rotted teeth, cancer of the oesophagus, tears to the oesophagus and stomach. Gordon has hereditary hypokalemia. This movie shows the effects on him and explains how breeders of Burmese cats, or related breeds, can help to eradicate this condition - for the price of a stamp and a few minutes of your time. Please forward this to anyone who might be interested. I am sure many cats are put to sleep because this condition is not widely recognised - my own experienced vets were baffled at first. Gordon's bald patches are from his ultrasound kidney scan.

This is my cat Ally. She will be 20 years old in May of 2010. Ally has been very healthy for most of her life. Not until 2009, did she begin to develop some health issues. I decided to post this information, along with 2 videos, to possibly help other people who might be having similar problems with their cat. The first indication of any problems was when Ally began bumping into things in the house. She had become blind. I took her immediately to a veterinary eye doctor who diagnosed high blood pressure. He prescribed amlodipine besylate. If you catch the high blood pressure in time, it is sometimes possible that the blindness will reverse. Ally seemed to regain a small amount of vision, but is now totally blind. If you notice any symptoms of blindness, get your cat to a vet as soon as possible. The sooner you do, the better the outcome. Do not simply attribute it to old age. This past week, when Ally got up from a nap, her left front paw did not want to cooperate. She dragged it along on her way to get a drink. I thought she might have broken it. After her drink, it was a little better, but she was still limping. The next day, it seemed much better, but she was now limping on her right front paw. I was pretty sure now that this was a neurological problem and scoured the internet for help (with no real luck). I also pored through her blood work report she had gotten just 2 weeks ago, but in general had turned out pretty well for a cat her age. The only thing that stuck <b>...</b>
