Her days are organized around checking the Homeland Security color-coded terrorism threat advisory system. Just as the different threat levels trigger specific actions from the American government, they also trigger different obsessive compulsive tendencies in the paranoid woman. The woman's fear is exemplified by a chorus of dancers that exist somewhere between her mind and reality. As the terrorist threat level increases over the course of one day, so does the woman's fear. With the memories of September 11, 2001 only two years past, and on the onslaught of two wars, Afghanistan and Iraq; ignorance, racism and hate against Muslims are at its height. Ashes is a story about a Muslim-American boy headed to Washington DC from a connecting flight in New York's JFK Airport. He is profiled as a terrorist because of his bearded look and traditional garb. The boy is beaten and questioned profusely because of the items he is carrying with him. A book in Arabic, which is thought to be a terrorist handbook. A burnt American flag, which resembles hate against American and Americans. And a jar full of white dust, which in the scare of post 9/11 could be anthrax. At first the boy is not willing to speak anymore to the Department of Homeland Security Agent because he is discriminated against, but when the agent begins to scatter and desecrate his belongings, the boy erupts in rage and begins to speak about the significance of each item. At first revealing that the foreign book in Arabic, is not a terrorist handbook but the holiest text of Muslims, the Quran, which belong to his brother. The agent then accuses the boy's brother of being a terrorist, finally allowing the boy to no longer be ashamed of anything and tell the story of his brother, a Lance Corporal in the US Marine Corps. The burnt American flag was something his brother saved after a raid on a US Military base in Afghanistan. And finally revealing the items in the jar, his brother's ashes. The <b>...</b>
