Duchess of Idaho Video

Eleanor Powell's last big-screen appearance - other than clips in compilation movies of the 1970s-90s ("That's Entertainment" and its successors) - was a cameo in this 1950 film. MGM had moved on from lavish tap dance productions to extravagant water ballets, with Esther Williams as their new female star. Eleanor spent the next few years leading an Emmy award-winning local religious show for children, while raising her son Peter. In the early 1960s, after her divorce from Glenn Ford, she made a very successful comeback as a nightclub entertainer, dancing as well or better than in her earlier days, according to the critics.

Awesome tap dance performed by the ''Queen Of Tap Dancing'' Eleanor Powell. This was her second appearance in any color film after Thousands Cheer where she made an little cameo appearance for the famous dance number ''Boogie Woogie''. She really looks more great in color! This was also her last appearance at MGM movies. Film: The Duchess of Idaho, 1950 Starring: Esther Williams, Van Johnson, John Lund, Paula Raymond, Clinton Sundberg, Mel Tormé Cameo Appearance: Lena Horne, Eleanor Powell

Recorded February 24, 1950. Kay Kyser and his Orchestra, with vocals by Sue Bennett and The Campus Kids, released on Columbia Records. Song was originally performed by Connie Haines and Van Johnson in the 1950 movie "Duchess of Idaho." Musicians on the Kay Kyser recording include well-known band members Merwyn Bogue (a/k/a/ Ish Kabibble), who played cornet/trumpet, and saxophonist Jack Martin. Recording was made during the time Kay Kyser's "College of Musical Knowledge" aired on NBC Television.

She can ski too! Slipping a fur-lined parka over her trademark bathing suit, Hollywood's favorite mermaid hits the snow-covered slopes of Idaho's famous Sun Valley in this charming, song-filled romantic comedy. But never fear, aqua lovers, for the film also features two Esther Williams water ballets "of the extra gorgeous variety" (Los Angeles Times). Cast as a successful swimming star, Miss Williams has never looked lovelier as she travels to Sun Valley to help her lovesick roommate (Paula Raymond) snare her rich but elusive boss (John Lund). But when both Lund and bandleader Van Johnson fall head over heels for Esther, she finds herself having to tread water in a sea of light romance. With its breathtaking scenery captured in rich Technicolor, this lavish production features a top-drawer cast that includes Mel Tormé, Clinton Sundberg and Amanda Blake (Gunsmoke's Miss Kitty) -- plus special appearances by Lena Horne, Eleanor Powell and Red Skelton.

My nephew was over and I was watching the Esther Williams marathon on TCM, Eleanor Powell made a cameo appearance on "Duchess of Idaho" and my nephew was mesmerized by her dancing! He kept asking "Who's that?" And I just learned two days ago that he likes girls... LOL!
