The Coconino National Forest is a 1.856-million acre (7,511 km2) United States National Forest located in northern Arizona in the vicinity of Flagstaff. Originally established in 1898 as the "San Francisco Mountains National Forest Reserve", the area was designated a U.S. National Forest in 1908 when the San Francisco Mountains National Forest Reserve was merged with lands from other surrounding forest reserves to create the Coconino National Forest. Today, the Coconino National Forest contains diverse landscapes, including deserts, ponderosa pine forests, flatlands, mesas, alpine tundra, and ancient volcanic peaks. The forest surrounds the towns of Sedona and Flagstaff and borders four other national forests; the Kaibab National Forest to the west and northwest, the Prescott National Forest to the southwest, the Tonto National Forest to the south, and the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest to the southeast. The forest contains all or parts of ten designated wilderness areas, including the Kachina Peaks Wilderness, which includes the summit of the San Francisco Peaks. The headquarters are in Flagstaff. There are local ranger district offices in Flagstaff, Happy Jack, and Sedona.

This exclusive historical footage of beautiful Lockett Meadow was taken between 2005 and 2009. Currently this area is being threatened by the Schultz Fire left abandoned by a careless camper on Father's Day, 2010. Many of the forrested areas included in this video have been sadly burned in recent days. Fire crews up to 1000 members strong supported by airplane tankers and helicopters are battling to keep Lockett Meadow and other areas of the San Francisco Peaks unharmed. There have been back burns recently around Sugarloaf Mountain on the edge of this precious riparian area located inside the Coconino National Forest. The city of Flagstaff, Arizona gets much of it's drinking water from the Inner Basin's springs. Lockett Meadow is a pristine area surrounded by mature Aspen trees that is enjoyed by camping families and nature lovers from all over the world. As of June 27th, 2010 the Schultz Fire has consumed nearly 15000 acres most of which is located on the East side of the San Francisco Peaks and is 50% contained at a cost of nearly $3000000. Lockett Meadow is also home to one of the most scenic trailheads for hikers to access the summit of Humphrey's Peak, the tallest point in Arizona at over 12400 feet! This segment can be found on our third DVD entitled: "Free Camping 'RV Boondocking' in Northern Arizona" - A series dedicated to outdoor lovers of all ages and RV Travel in Arizona. May 14, from Oracle to June 2, Flagstaff The Nimblewill Nomad begins this segment with a little nature study; two instances of Coontail Rattlesnakes, both providing you with an up-close look and sound that's almost like being there yourself. Next he pauses at the White Canyon Passage, north of Kearney, to provide a panoramic sweep of the area, including the Saguaro Cactus in bloom. As the Nomad treks on, through the Tonto National Forest, in the Mazatzal Wilderness, he stops to take a little trip down memory lane, as he photographs a place called Doll Baby Ranch, and narrates a special message to friend and fellow thu-hiker, Dan Sheltowee Rogers. Further down the trail, the Nomad stops to enjoy the cool, clear, delicious water from White Rock Spring, a neat little oasis in the middle of the hot, sun-baked desert. On the Mogollon Rim, the Nomad takes time to record as he walks the trail, just to show everyone the crushed limestone path that has been laid through this area of the trail, and to thank those who were responsible for putting it there. Another panoramic sweep, in the Coconino National Forest, looking toward the San Francisco Peaks, is where this video ends, as he heads on down the trail to Flagstaff.
