The general election forms the fifth step of the seven-step "roadmap to democracy" proposed by the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) in 2003, the sixth and seventh steps being the convening of elected representatives and the building of a modern, democratic nation, respectively. However, the National League for Democracy boycotted the election. The Union Solidarity and Development Party declared victory, after at least two opposition parties conceded. The United Nations and Western countries have condemned the elections as fraudulent. |
