While the Humvee has been a staple of the American military for more than two decades, today's military needs a new vehicle -- one capable of meeting the challenges of the 21st century. The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) program was developed to meet this need. The JLTV program, managed by the Army's Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM), challenged industry to bring forth a family of vehicles -- with companion trailers -- "capable of performing multiple mission roles that will be designed to provide protected, sustained, networked mobility for personnel and payloads across the full range of military operations." The JLTV requirements include: Increasing protection and performance over the current fleet; Minimizing ownership costs by maximizing commonality, fuel efficiency and other means; and Maintaining effective competition throughout the lifecycle. The Valanxâ„¢ is the BAE Systems-Navistar team's answer to this challenge -- it is the best vehicle, manufactured by the best team. In October 2008, the BAE Systems-Navistar team was one of three industry teams selected by TACOM to participate in the 27-month Technology Demonstration phase of the JLTV program. www.thevalanx.com

In a significant project milestone, BAE Systems is celebrating the production of the 1000th Nulka active missile decoy round with a commemorative event today at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. The Company was recently awarded its 12th successive annual contract to produce additional rounds for Nulka, the world's most effective soft-kill anti-ship missile. BAE Systems Australia Chief Executive Jim McDowell said: "This is a truly impressive piece of engineering — revolutionary when it first appeared on the scene and still unique. "It's a system one of which my Company is tremendously proud — A missile that stands on its tail and entices enemy anti-ship missiles away from their targets. It's now seen as an essential element of an effective, layered anti-ship missile defence capability "Nulka's success speaks for itself: I can confirm today that Nulka is to be installed aboard the US Navy's Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. "Already fitted to all other major surface combatants of the navies of the US and Australia — that's more than 130 ships — the carriers were alone in not being equipped with this advanced 'soft-kill' weapon. "These huge ships are significantly larger than any other using the system —which speaks volumes about its effectiveness. "Nulka is a truly collaborative effort between government and industry on both sides of the Pacific." With a total program value to date of over AUD $900 million, Nulka is Australia's largest regular defence export program ...
