BAE Systems plc (Lse - BA.) is a British multinational defence, security and aerospace company headquartered in Farnborough, Hampshire, United Kingdom, that has global interests, particularly in North America through its subsidiary BAE Systems Inc. BAE is among the world's largest military contractors; in 2009 it was the second-largest based on revenues. It was formed on 30 November 1999 by the £7.7 billion merger of two British companies, Marconi Electronic Systems (MES), the defence electronics and naval shipbuilding subsidiary of the General Electric Company plc (GEC), and aircraft, munitions and naval systems manufacturer British Aerospace (BAe).

BAE is the successor to various aircraft and defence electronics companies, including The Marconi Company, the first commercial company devoted to the development and use of radio; A.V. Roe and Company, one of the world's first aircraft companies; de Havilland, manufacturer of the world's first commercial jet airliner; British Aircraft Corporation, co-manufacturer of the Concorde supersonic transport; and Supermarine, manufacturer of the Spitfire. It has increasingly disengaged from its businesses in continental Europe in favour of investing in the United States. Since its formation it has sold its shares in Airbus, Astrium, AMS and Atlas Elektronik.

BAE Systems is involved in several major defence projects, including the F-35 Lightning II, the Eurofighter Typhoon, the

|}s. The company has been the subject of criticism, in terms of general opposition to the arms trade and particularly specific allegations of unethical and corrupt practices, including the Al Yamamah contracts with Saudi Arabia that have earned BAE and its predecessor £43 billion in twenty years. In February 2010, BAE Systems agreed to pay £286 million in criminal fines to the Serious Fraud Office and the US Department of Justice for failure to keep "reasonably accurate accounting records" with regard to activities in Tanzania and for "conspiring to make false statements to the US government."

BAE Systems is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.

BAE Systems has led a fully integrated industry effort to deliver a production standard escape system for the F-35 Lightning II aircraft. The F-35 escape system is used in emergency situations ensuring pilots can eject safely. It will be fitted to all 3000+ F-35 aircraft to be operated by Armed Forces across the globe. The system has been tested to its limits as a full scale front section of the aircraft, complete with ejection seat and mannequin was launched at speeds in excess of 600 mph down a test track putting the escape system through its paces. More than 30 ejection seat tests were completed in the UK, France and the USA.

The BAE Systems/Boeing Harrier II (GR5, GR7, and GR9 series) is a second generation vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) jet aircraft used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and, since 2006, the Royal Navy. It was developed from the earlier Hawker Siddeley Harrier and is very closely related to the US-built AV-8B Harrier II. Both are primarily used for light attack or multi-role tasks, and are often operated from small aircraft carriers. -The GR7 had its maiden flight in May 1990 and made its first operational deployment in August 1995 over the former Yugoslavia. While the GR7 deployed on Invincible class aircraft carriers during testing as early as June 1994, the first operational deployments at sea began in 1997. This arrangement was formalised with the Joint Force Harrier, operating with the Royal Navy's Sea Harrier.

155 BONUS Top-Attack Anti-Armour Shell The BONUS round is fired from a regular 155mm howitzer and releases two submunitions who then searches for armored vehicles in a spiral pattern. When the target is located the unit fires an EFP (Explosivley Formed Penetrator) that kills the target. Bae Systems, Giat Industries, Bofors www.liveleak.com

When it comes to bulletproof material, I think of strong, dense objects like concrete and really thick glass. I've never thought of liquids. But British scientists have, and they say liquid armor is better than ordinary Kevlar. They're calling it "bulletproof custard" because once struck, its molecules lock together to create a denser surface. According to the scientists who've developed it, the liquid armor works by absorbing the force of the bullet strike and responding to it by becoming much thicker and more sticky. But the idea behind liquid armor isn't to replace Kevlar but rather to complement it to create a sort of super armor that's lighter, more flexible, and of course, stronger. In tests, a 10-layer Kevlar and liquid armor vest outperformed a 31-layer ordinary Kevlar vest. Cutting out layers of Kevlar without losing any of that bullet stopping effectiveness is a win for everyone. Researchers at BAE systems in Bristol combined a "shear-thickening" liquid with the existing material used in bullet- proof vests - called Kevlar - to create the new armour. The chemical formula of the new liquid is being kept secret but scientists say it works by thickening and becoming sticky on impact with a bullet. BAE's business development manager, described the new material as "bullet-proof custard". He told the BBC: "It's very similar to custard in the sense that the molecules lock together when it's struck." To test the new armour, scientists used a large gas gun to fire ...

Defence firm BAE Systems officially unveiled its first ever high-tech unmanned stealth jet. The Taranis, named after the Celtic god of thunder, is about the same size as a Hawk jet and is equipped with stealth equipment and an 'autonomous' artificial intelligence system. The plane will test the possibility of developing the first ever autonomous stealthy Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) that would ultimately be capable of precisely striking targets at long range, even in another continent. Taranis, the prototype of an unmanned combat aircraft of the future, which was unveiled today The trial aircraft cost £143 million pounds to construct and spearheads BAE's drive to convince the Ministry of Defence to invest in the next generation of unmanned aircraft. Almost invisible to ground radar, it is designed to travel at high jet speeds and cover massive distances between continents. The plane is built to carry out intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance on enemy territory using onboard sensors. And it has been designed to carry a cache of weapons -- including bombs and missiles -, giving it a potential long-range strike capability. It can be controlled from anywhere in the world with satellite communications. Experts say the cutting-edge design is at the forefront of world technology and as advanced as any US development. The plane began development in December 2006, and is intended to prove the UK's ability to produce a stealthy UAV. Taranis will be stealthy, fast ...

Navistar Defense and BAE Systems unveiled their Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) at Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Winter Symposium and Exposition in FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida on Feb 27, 2008. What is JLTV? JLTV is a Joint Army/Marine Corps program, which consists of a family of vehicles (FoV) with companion trailers capable of performing multiple mission roles that will be designed to provide protected, sustained, networked mobility for personnel and payloads across the full range of military operations (traditional to irregular). The initial production of JLTV's will provide the Operational Forces with tactical wheeled vehicles that provide a high level of scalable protection, improved sustainment, and net-ready maneuver platforms, that are strategically and operationally transportable, and tactically mobile across all terrain. What will JLTV do for the Warfighter? The JLTV capabilities represent a shift to adapt from a threat-based, Cold War garrison force focused on containment to a capabilities-based expeditionary force focused on flexibility, survivability, force protection, responsiveness, and agility. JLTV Capabilities: The JLTV FoV must be capable of operating across a broad spectrum of terrain and weather conditions. The services and the SOCOM require enhanced capabilities, greater than those provided by the existing High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) to support the Joint Functional Concepts (JFC) of Battlespace Awareness (BA ...
