Anna Maria Bligh (born 14 July 1960) is an Australian politician and the Premier of Queensland since 2007. The 2009 Queensland state election was the first time a female-led political party won or retained state or federal government in Australia. Bligh has been an Australian Labor Party member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly seat of South Brisbane since 1995.

Bligh is the first woman to be appointed Premier of Queensland, the third female Premier of an Australian state, and the sixth female head of government of an Australian state or territory. She is one of three current female heads of government in Australia (the others being Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and Premier of Tasmania Lara Giddings).

My submission to Project Next with the ABC. The parties in question: Australian Labor Party: www.alp.org.au And their leader in Queensland, Anna Bligh: www.thepremier.qld.gov.au (this link might need to change should the LNP win the election) Liberal National Party: www.lnp.org.au And their leader Lawrence Springborg: www.springborg.com For the benefit of the Americans (and anyone else who's confused) I should clarify: 'Liberal' in Australia actually means right-wing, so the Liberal Party here is kind-of-sort-of similar to your Republican Party.

ABC Midday News 12:00 AEDT - Queenslanders have been told to prepare themselves for a terrifying 24 hours as the "most catastrophic storm ever" takes aim at heavily populated areas of the state's north. Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi was upgraded to category five this morning as the weather bureau warned it was likely to be "more life-threatening" than any storm seen in Australia in living memory. Tens of thousands of people are fleeing their homes ahead of the monster storm, which is expected to hit the coast between Cairns and Innisfail with winds of up to 295 kilometres per hour near the core. Premier Anna Bligh says the storm's expected landfall at about midnight AEST tonight is the worst possible news for a state which is already reeling from recent flooding. She says Cyclone Yasi is the "most catastrophic storm to ever hit our coast". ABC News - ABC1 2 Feb 2011 12:00 AEDT Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Australia Floods Tribute : (Music -True Blue, John Williamson) Is a collection of photos that depict the indomitable spirit of Australians through the beginning and aftermath of the tragic floods. In many parts of Queensland the rains started in early December and went through until only two days ago (13/1/2011). It is also a thank you to the SES - State Emergency Services and all the volunteers and goodwill of the thousands that help their fellow Australians in a time of desperate need. To the Premier Anna Bligh, you are doing a fantastic job leading the recovery. The unselfish dedication the Police, Fire Service, SES, Army, Health Organisations, Red Cross even the Kiwi volunteers are simply astounding. Hearts are broken but the Spirit will endure. For more news visit â english.ntdtv.com or Follow us on Twitter â http In Australia, as floodwaters subsided in Queensland, authorities are looking to assess the damages and to start with the rebuilding effort. Australia's worst floods in decades is forecast to trim about $5 billion off the country's economy. Flood levels have begun to subside on Friday in the Australian city of Rockhampton. Major General Mick Slater, head of the Flood Recovery Taskforce, toured the affected areas to assess damage and establish where to begin rebuilding efforts. [Major General Mick Slater, Flood Recovery Taskforce]: "Today's the first chance that I've had to get out and start engaging with the communities in the flood affected area. Because I do realize that they will have different needs. They'll have different needs at different times and the only way I can find out what those needs are is to get out and listen to the people." Flood water levels have peaked in Rockhampton and more rain has been forecast for the weekend. The swollen Fitzroy River peaked on Wednesday at about 30 feet, but has since subsided to about 28 feet on Friday. But authorities expected it to remain at this height for at least a week. Over three hundred houses have been inundated in Rockhampton, a community of 75000 situated 370 miles north of the state capital Brisbane. Almost four thousand people are displaced and are staying in eight evacuation centers. Queensland premier Anna Bligh says recovery is likely to ...

Many people may not be aware that the BILL that will mandate water fluoridation on almost all of Queenslands public water supplies was passed through the Queensland Parliament late Thursday night 13 th March. The BILL as passed, additionally removes any liability from the government, politicians, Councils and water authorities. The Queensland mainstream media has barely reported on the passing of the BILL, an article in the early edition of the Courier Mail was replaced with an article of an unrelated issue in the later edition. The Queensland Media has also not reported that it will be impossible for anyone to be able to sue for any harm caused by water fluoridation, even harm resulting from accidents. On the 12 th February a delegation which included a Medical Doctor, a Doctor of Biology and a Medical Scientist presented to the Premier, Health Minister, Chief Health Officer and Chief Dental Officer, evidence that Qld Health had doctored data on tooth decay that Qld Health used to promote water fluoridation and also showed how Qld Health had illegitimately dismissed a study showing a robust link between water fluoridation and Osteosarcoma in boys. The delegation also informed the government representatives of a recently re-confirmed link between the use of Silicofluorides ( the Qld government intending using these chemicals to fluoridate the water ) and increased blood lead levels in children and several other health concerns associated with water fluoridation. The issue ...

If Queensland Premier Anna Bligh is fair dinkum about saving lives on our roads, she should forget about shock TV ads. Quite frankly, I think we've all had enough of the Enough is Enough TV ads. What's needed is a real police presence on our roads -- and not just over holiday periods like the Easter long weekend. Seven people died on Queensland roads this Easter -- Australia's worst road toll for the long weekend. Driving back from Toowoomba on the weekend, I can't say I'm really surprised. We took the picturesque country route via Esk and Kilcoy -- thinking it would be a nice change of pace from the bumper to bumper highway traffic. It was a pleasant enough drive for most of the way -- apart from one idiot -- a Coolum tradesman if his utility was anything to go by - who continued to tailgate me until he risked all to overtake on a narrow road with very little visibility. I was only doing 100km/h -- the speed limit -- obviously too slow for him. Each weekend, Queensland drivers are forced to deal with the mindless minority -- drivers who seem to think they are indestructible -- until they kill or seriously injure someone else. During the three hour trip back from Toowoomba, I saw only one speed enforcement operation -- and that was coming down the Toowoomba range where police seemed more intent on getting their ticket quota for the day than really saving lives. Anna Bligh says she is at her 'wits end' with motorists' behavior. She's not the only one. Yet her government ...

budurl.com - Credits to TenNews. Damage on the main street of town on February 4, 2011 in Cardwell, Australia Cardwell is one of the worst hit towns after Cyclone Yasi ripped into Queensland. Watch Cyclone Yasi news update 24/7 at budurl.com Thousands of Australian soldiers, police and emergency workers have been sent to help Queensland's stricken coastal communities, left reeling by the state's worst storm in a century. Emergency teams are cutting through the debris to reach towns still isolated after Cyclone Yasi hit on Wednesday. Police have confirmed the first fatality; a 23-year-old man. Heavy rains and flash floods are said to be hampering rescue efforts. Power is still out for 150000 homes. The category five cyclone - the most severe level - has shattered communities along Queensland's north-east coast. "It's a war zone," said Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan, after a 30-minute tour of the town of Tully. Officials described as a "tragic loss of life", the death of a young man suffocated by fumes from a generator he was running in a closed room as he sheltered from the storm. State Premier Anna Bligh said there could be "some sad news in the next couple of days" as rescue work progressed. But she said that given the scale of the devastation there had not been a "mass loss of life" which she described as "a great relief". Some 4000 soldiers and 600 police and emergency workers are at work in the state. A ship carrying nearly 3000 tons of food and essential supplies ...
