'American Gangster' is a 2007 crime film directed by Ridley Scott adapted from a New York magazine story "The Return of Superfly", by Mark Jacobson, starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. Washington portrays Frank Lucas, a real-life gangster from Harlem who smuggled heroin into the United States on American service planes returning from the Vietnam War. Crowe portrays Richie Roberts, a detective attempting to bring down Lucas' drug empire.

Filming was done on location in New York City. American Gangster was released in the United States and Canada on November 2, 2007. The film was also nominated for two Academy Awards, including a notable Best Supporting Actress nomination for Ruby Dee. This is the second film Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe worked on together after Virtuosity.

He eventually made his way to Harlem where he became a heroin kingpin by traveling to Asia's Golden Triangle to make connections, shipping heroin back to the US in the coffins of soldiers killed in Vietnam. He soon made upwards of one million dollars a day in drug sales. Lucas was shadowed by lawman, Richie Roberts, who finally helped bring the kingpin to justice. The two then worked together to expose the crooked cops and foreign nationals who made importing heroin so easy. Den Stoff lässt er durch das amerikanische Militär in die Vereinigten Staaten transportieren. Der Clou: Sein âBlue Magic" ist doppelt so gut und halb so teuer, wie die Ware, die sonst in den StraÃen New Yorks gehandelt wird. Das macht Lucas schnell zum mächtigsten Mann der Unterwelt in Harlem, und nebenbei noch zum ersten Afroamerikaner in dieser Position. Auf der anderen Seite des Gesetzes erlebt die Korruption innerhalb der New Yorker Polizei gerade eine Hochphase. Groteskerweise ist es dort der unbestechliche Cop Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe), dem seine Kollegen nicht mehr trauen -- eben weil er absolut sauber und ebenso fanatisch ist. Einen Kofferraum voller Drogengeld, das niemand vermisst hätte, bringt er zum Revier zurück. Wert: knapp eine Million Dollar. Roberts wird dazu berufen, eine Sondereinheit gegen die Drogenkriminalität zusammenzustellen und kommt bald auf die Spur von Frank Lucas, der zuvor in Polizeikreisen völlig unbekannt war, weil er sich stets im Verborgenen hielt <b>...</b>
