He was commander of sector 1, transferred to teldhala in May 1971. He organised and created Sector 11 and remained its commander. During August 1971, He was appointed Brigade Commander of the Bangladesh Forces during the Bangladesh war of independence with Pakistan. During his administraton, he first founded JAGODAL but he himself did not become a member of it. Then he founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), one of the two largest political parties in the country. He is popularly known as Shaheed President Zia, meaning martyred Zia, in reference to his 1981 assassination.

Ziaur Rahman, (January 19, 1936 -- May 30, 1981) was the President of Bangladesh and the founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Popularly called Zia, he is also sometimes referred to as a Shaheed (Martyr). His widow Begum Khaleda Zia has served as Prime Minister of Bangladesh three times. An officer in the Pakistan Army, Zia's unit captured the Kalurghat radio station at the onset of the Bangladesh Liberation War and declared the independence of Bangladesh on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Recognised as a war hero, he was honoured with the Bir Uttom in 1972. A high-ranking accomplished officer in the Bangladesh Army, Zia was appointed chief of army staff following the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975. Although briefly overthrown in a counter-coup, Zia returned to power through what is called sepoy mutiny organised by Colonel Abu Taher.[1] Declaring himself president in 1977, Zia won a referendum held in 1978. Founding the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Zia won widespread popular support for stabilising the nation and leading it in a new direction. A right-wing politician, Zia established free-market economic policies in a 19-point programme of industrialisation and development. He adopted policies bringing the government increasingly under Islam, which he included in the national constitution. Zia controversially pardoned the assassins of Sheikh Mujib by signing the Indemnity Act and rehabilitated individuals who had supported the Pakistan Army. A ...

english.ntdtv.com Tensions are flaring in the country of Bangladesh today, which borders northeast India and Burma. Members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party have gone on a nationwide strike... after their leader was evicted from her house. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, or BNP, staged a nationwide strike on Tuesday. The strike was called after the government evicted their leader from her home. They say authorities have failed to run the government smoothly, and failed to tackle power and gas shortages. Demonstrators say police arrested at least 30 BNP leaders on Tuesday. [Abdus Salam Azad, Leader, Bangladesh Nationalist Party] "We were marching peacefully on the street to support the strike in the morning, but police stormed our procession and arrested about 30 to 40 leaders and activists, now the police have surrounded our office and seized us." The strike is the second led by the BNP since the government evicted their leader, former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, from the house she lived in for decades. The house was leased to her after her husband, former army chief and president Ziaur Rahman, was killed in an abortive coup in 1981. The government of her archrival, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, cancelled the lease last year. Khaleda took legal action to keep her home but lost her final battle on Monday at the Supreme Court, leading to a night of violent protests by BNP members. The BNP say police have detained thousands of their activists over the past few ...

Before BNP coming to power in 1991, there had been no controversy about who is the declarer of independence of Bangladesh. Even Ziaur Rahman the founder of BNP had never claimed that he himself did the declaration rather he did it on behalf of greatest national leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In 1976 in an interview with "Shaptahik Bichitra" Maj Zia told the reporter that he did broadcast the messages after many other broadcasters. It is utter ill fate of all Bangladeshi that BNP along with Jamat Islami are trying to change the history by expunging the name of Sheikh Mujib from the original speech made by Zia. But history cannot be changed as it lingers everywhere by honest person around the world. In this video you can hear the original audio plus newspaper documents where it explicitly says that Sheikh Mujib proclaimed the independence. To who are obstinate they might say as Maj zia read the message he is the declarer. But they are mixing the word "declarer" with "reader". Major Zia was a simple reader as MA Hannan who was the first reader of Sheikh Mujibs message of independence.
