Friedrich Wilhelm Reinhold Pieck (-deˈvɪlhɛlm ˈpiːk; 3 January 1876 - 7 September 1960) was a German politician and a Communist. In 1949, he became the first President of the German Democratic Republic, an office abolished upon his death. He was succeeded by Walter Ulbricht, who served as Chairman of the Council of States.
