In the largest uprising in the United States outside of the Civil War, thousands of miners waged armed warfare in Logan County, West Virginia against mine owners, the sheriff and federal troops in an effort to unionize the mines in 1921. The battle marked the first time US troops were ordered to bomb civilians. The United Mine Workers (UMW) enjoyed widespread support among the general population and were the first industrial union to admit African Americans on an equal basis. The union leader Bill Blizzard eventually surrendered his army in order to avoid further civilian casulties. Blizzard was acquitted in court of insurrection. Future UMW & Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) leader John L. Lewis fought alongside Blizzard at the Battle of Blair Mountain and succeeded in getting recognition for the union 14 years later in southern West Virginia.

Hillbilly Proud made it to the Doddridge County Fair in West Union, WV for the first time on August 21, 2010. The summer day started full of sunshine and then took turns between rain and sun before the rain won out. The great thing about a mud race is that it is one of the only events where rain can make conditions better. The pit was easy early, but once the guys started digging in the pit got a lot harder and the bogging got a lot better. The pit was also worked in between classes to keep it challenging. It was a great day of racing and we really appreciate Doddridge County Fair having us.

At approximately 5:30 am on Wednesday, November 20, 1968, an explosion occurred in the Consol No.9 Mine, Mountaineer Coal Company, Division of Consolidation Coal Company, Farmington, Marion County, West Virginia. There were 99 miners in the mine when the explosion occurred, 78 of whom died as a result of the explosion. The other 21 miners survived the explosion and escaped to the surface. The mine was sealed at its surface openings on November 30, 1968. Damage to the mine in the explosion area was extensive, requiring loading of rock falls, replacement of ventilation and transportation facilities, and in some cases new mine entries to bypass extensively caved areas. Investigative activities were continued, in cooperation with the Company, State, and United Mine Workers of America (UMW A) organizations, as mine areas were recovered. Between 1969 and 1978, the bodies of 59 victims were recovered and brought to the surface. Recovery operations ceased and all entrances to the mine were permanently sealed in November 1978, leaving 19 victims buried in the mine and leaving some areas of the mine unexplored. Lessons learned during early evaluation of this disaster were incorporated into the Federal Coal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1969. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, generally referred to as the Coal Act, was more comprehensive and more stringent than any previous Federal legislation governing the mining industry. The Coal Act included surface as well as ...

Two Investigative news stories look into the secrecy behind the deadly Bayer CropScience Chemical Plant Explosion that occurred in Institute, WV on August 28, 08. Bayer endangered the lives of the public, two employees were killed, six emergency responders were sickened and a tank full of the deadly chemical methyl isocyanate was close to exploding. One of the men who died, Barry Withrow, had a toxic level of cyanide in his blood that no one has been able to explain. Sixteen air monitoring devices meant to detect chemical releases and video cameras were not working or had been disabled. The Institute plant stores the largest amount of methyl isocyanate (MIC) in the world. Around 40000 pounds of MIC are stored above ground here. Below ground is an additional storage tank that can hold up to 200000 pounds of MIC. Congressional investigators concluded that the explosion could have easily damaged the nearby MIC storage tank and triggered a disaster that would have been worse than Bhopal. An explosion at Union Carbide twenty five years ago in Bhopal India released 50000-90000 pounds of methl isocyanate gas exposing around 500000 people to deadly toxins. Within 72 hours about 8-10000 people died. Since then it is estimated that over 25, 0000 people have died from toxic gas related diseases. These numbers do not include the hundreds of thousands of people who continue to suffer from gas related illness or are born with them. We should also consider how methyl isocyanate impacted ...
