WestJet Airlines Ltd. (TSX - WJA) is a Canadian low-cost carrier that provides scheduled and charter air service to 71 destinations in Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean. Founded in 1996, WestJet is currently the second largest Canadian air carrier, behind Air Canada, operating an average of 425 flights and carrying over 45,000 passengers per day.

WestJet is a public company with over 8,000 employees, and is a rarity in the airline industry as it is non-unionized. The airline operates variants of a single aircraft type, all from the Boeing 737 Next Generation family. WestJet has its headquarters and main hub at Calgary International Airport, in Alberta, with another large hub at Toronto Pearson International Airport, in Ontario.

WestJet had passenger revenues of $2.2 billion (CAD) in 2009.

Effective today, WestJet will be using air mixed with helium in the ventilation system to lighten the weight of the aircraft. Helium is approximately 85 per cent lighter than nitrogen, which accounts for 80 per cent of the air we breathe. With a maximum takeoff weight of more than 150000 pounds, adding helium to the air mix will provide fuel savings of approximately three to four per cent on board WestJet's Boeing Next-Generation 737s. This will, in turn, allow WestJet to pass the savings on to its guests. "As a low-cost airline, we are constantly looking for innovative ways to keep our costs low," said Richard Bartrem, WestJet's Vice-President, Communications and Community Relations.
