The Utah Jazz are a professional basketball team based in Salt Lake City, Utah. They are currently a part of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The franchise began in 1974 as the New Orleans Jazz, in New Orleans, Louisiana, but the team moved to Utah in 1979 after just five seasons.

The Jazz were one of the most unsuccessful teams in the league in their early years, and it would be 10 years before they made a playoff appearance (in 1984). They would not miss the playoffs again until 2004. During the late 1980s, John Stockton and Karl Malone arose as the franchise players for the team, and formed one of the most famed point guard power forward duos in NBA history. Led by coach Jerry Sloan, who took over for Frank Layden in 1988, they became one of the powerhouse teams of the 1990s, culminating in two NBA Finals appearances in 1997 and 1998, where they lost both times to the Chicago Bulls, led by Michael Jordan. Both Stockton and Malone moved on in 2003. After missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons the Jazz returned to prominence under the on-court leadership of point guard Deron Williams. However, partway through the 2010-11 season, the Jazz began a restructuring after the retirement of Jerry Sloan and trade of Deron Williams. As of 2011, the Jazz are the only team in the "Big Four" sports leagues located in the state of Utah.

The Los Angeles Lakers quickly discouraged any Utah fans who hoped to see the Jazz set a team record for consecutive home wins. Jazz fans had barely started booing Kobe Bryant before he and the Lakers made nine of their first 10 shots and were up by 20 before the end of the first quarter. Los Angeles held off every Utah rally from there and won 106-95 on Thursday night, ending the Jazz's 19-game home winning streak. "The important thing for us is to get off to a good start. We were able to do that and keep the crowd out of it for the most part,'' said Bryant, who scored 27 as the Lakers finished a four-game road trip 2-2 and pulled slightly ahead of New Orleans for the best record in the Western Conference. Lamar Odom had 21 points and 12 rebounds, Derek Fisher added 11 points and Vladimir Radmanovic scored 13 for the Lakers, who are the first team to win in Utah in 2008. Utah's home winning streak ended with a pretty big thud as the Jazz were never able to get closer than 10 until the final few minutes. "They went out and buried us right away,'' Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. The Jazz got within eight points down the stretch, but the Lakers didn't let them any closer. One Utah fan marred the already ugly loss by throwing a beer on the court after a dunk by Odom with 21 seconds left. Carlos Boozer had 23 points and 15 rebounds and Deron Williams had 26 points and 12 assists for Utah. Andrei Kirilenko scored 15 points, Ronnie Brewer had 12 and Mehmet Okur 10. Difficult calls for Utah Jazz fans to live with. Everyone knows that MJ pushed off on Bryon Russell on the go ahead shot in Game Six, and while it would have been very difficult for a ref to make the call against the premier player in the league there were two calls earlier in the game that may have changed the outcome of the game and given Jazz fans a Dick Bavetta complex. Play one: Howard Eisley's three is taken away due to a called 24 second violation with the Jazz up 4 with approxiamately 9:50 to play in the second quarter. Play two: Ron Harper hits a 2 point field goal as the shot clock expires to tie the game at 79 with 4:00 to play in the fourth quarter. Refs were not allowed to review the video for shot clock violations in 1998, and if they could have the Jazz certainly would have been awarded Eisley's three in the 2nd and Harper would not have been awarded 2 points in the 4th. The fact that the ball was 5 feet out of Eisley's hand with 1 second left on the clock leads some to wonder... Game Seven would have been played in Utah, Scottie Pippen still would not have been one hundred percent, and the Jazz would have had all the momentum after winning two in a row to even the series at three a piece. Michael Jordan clearly outplayed the Jazz in the final minute of the game, but it should have never come to that. So says a still bitter Jazz fan..flame away :). Sorry for the Spanish play by play it was all I could find.

With Game 6 of the NBA Finals on the line, everyone in the Delta Center -- Utah Jazz coaches and players included -- knew the ball would end up in his hands. For the Chicago Bulls, too, it was another no-brainer. There was no play to call, no screens to set. It was simple: Get it to '23'. That Michael Jordan is the go-to guy in the last seconds of any close Bulls game is the worst secret in basketball -- and still it makes no difference. Further, the Jazz learned in heartbreaking fashion that the more there is at stake, the more pressure-packed the moment, the more unstoppable Jordan becomes. With Chicago trailing by three points in the final minute, Jordan first scored on a drive. Then he stripped the ball from Karl Malone at the defensive end. Finally, he buried the game-winning shot, a 20-footer with 5.2 seconds left, that gave the Bulls an 87-86 victory and their sixth championship in eight years. Jordan had overcome fatigue and finished with 45 points as he won his sixth Finals Most Valuable Player award, while reaffirming his status as the NBA's best player. "Let's face it," said Bulls guard Steve Kerr. "We all hopped on Michael's back. He just carried us. It was his game tonight. That guy was ridiculous. He is so good it's scary." Jordan shot 15-of-35 from the field and 12-of-15 from the line. He scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, including Chicago's final eight over the last 2:06, carrying the offense as Scottie Pippen -- hampered by a back injury ...
