The University of Pittsburgh, commonly referred to as Pitt, is a state-related research university located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Founded as Pittsburgh Academy in 1787 on what was then the American frontier, Pitt is one of the oldest continuously chartered institutions of higher education in the United States. Pitt evolved into the Western University of Pennsylvania with an alteration to its charter in 1819, and upon relocating to its current campus in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh in 1908, the school received its current moniker, the University of Pittsburgh. For most of its history Pitt was a private institution, until it became part of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education in 1966.

Pitt has been placed in the top cluster of 7 leading U.S. public research universities and among the clusters comprising the overall top 25 research universities, is ranked among U.S. News & World Reports top public universities, has been placed among the best for the quality of life of its students, has been named as a "best value" by various publications, and has appeared in multiple rankings of the world's top universities.

Pitt is among the nation's and world's most active research institutions as evidenced by its $642 million in annual research expenditures, its standing among the top five schools in the amount of National Institutes of Health research allocations, and its election as one of the 63 North American members of the Association of American Universities. Pitt and its medical school are also closely affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, one of the nation's leading academic medical centers.

Pitt is popularly recognized for its centerpiece building, the Cathedral of Learning, for its central role in developing the first polio vaccine, and for fielding nationally competitive NCAA Division I athletic programs.

Police used teargas pepper spray and rubber bullets against University of Pittsburgh students during the Pittsburgh G20 Summit. Many of the students were not part of any demonstration but bystanders, curious to find a mass of armed riot police on their campus. For more information and videos visit indypgh.org

University of Pittsburgh Panthers Cornerback Darrelle Revis was drafted by the New York Jets in the 1st round, 14th pick. His instincts make him an excellent fit for head coach Rex Ryan's defensive schemes and he is a playmaker than can make a difference.

Armed Police marched on the University of Pittsburgh campus after students gathered in hopes of getting a glimpse of Barack Obama at the Phipps Conservatory. There were maybe 20 protesters, and several hundred watching, at first. The police threw tear gas into the crowd, but the crowd reassembled. Later that night the police used serious intimidation techniques, including firing tear gas into crowds, using rubber bullets on students, beating people on the sidewalk with batons, and charging at crowds and arresting those who didn't run fast enough. Also, a new weapon called a Sound Cannon was fired on students, marking one of the first times the weapon has been used in America. (The first time was at a march earlier today, which I was also at.) Police MARCHED INTO OUR DORMITORIES and told us we needed to get in our rooms immediately or face arrest and expulsion. These are various snippets of video I took throughout the event. Later, Deputy Police Chief said that the police were moving against "anarchists" and that "some students" probably got caught up in the action.

Luke Rudkowski of We Are Change gives an update of his encounters with the police and national guard at the Friday night g20 protest that took place at the University of Pittsburgh. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for helping us raise money for our legal defense fund. Every little bit helps tremendously as we take on the greatest injustice. They can beat us with batons, tear gas, arrest and use all sorts of weapons on us but out continuation to fight for humanity will never stop! Although the fight is still not over, other WeAreChange members like Danny (nyc), Sam (Ohio) and Phil (Philly) who were also arrested and released from the detention center, will have to go to court. The legal defense funds will go towards them getting a good lawyer and making sure they are taken care of. The money left from the fines and lawyer fees for everyone, will go towards launching a lawsuit. We are not backing down from this fight and have never forgotten our promise to you that we will fight to the very end. Lee and myself were advised by our lawyer, that the best thing we could have done is taken a plea deal that was equivalent of having a parking ticket. We decided to do so in order to pick our battles wisely and continue our efforts uninterrupted. I would rather pay a parking ticket then waste tremendous amounts of time and energy going back and fourth to Pittsburgh which is an 8hr drive ...

Here is what my dorm looks like here at the University of Pittsburgh. My room usually isn't that neat but I do keep it clean, especially compared to most college students. The space open on my desk is usually where my laptop sits...but I was using it to do the recording. The view has to be one of the worst in the entire place, some windows show the whole campus or large portions of it...all I see is Towers A and B. :(
