University Park is a station on Metra's Metra Electric line located in University Park, Illinois. University Park is the southern terminus of the Metra Electric main line and is 31.5 mi (50.7 km) away from the northern terminus at Randolph Street Station. The station is located at 1900 University Parkway. In Metra's zone-based fare system, University Park is in zone G.

University Park station is located at grade level. The station consists of one island platform which serves two tracks; Canadian National tracks (ex-Illinois Central) parallel the Metra Electric tracks. The station has an unstaffed waiting room with a ticket vending machine. Parking is available at the station. University Park opened in 1977; Metra Electric service (then part of the Illinois Central Railroad) previously had terminated at Richton Park, the first stop after University Park.

University Park (Metra) Video

This is a video of Metra Electric and CN Chicago Subdivision footage on Chicago's far Southeast Side. Both lines are ex. Illinois Central. The Metra Electric line is entirely electrified and runs from Chicago's Millenium Station (formerly Randolph St. Station) in downtown Chicago South to University Park. It is 31 miles in length and has 49 stations along it's route most of which being in Chicago city limits. The platforms are higher than track level since the doors are higher on the cars, giving the trains the nickname, "Highliners." From about 16th Street in Chicago to the end of the line in University Park, the CN/IC Chicago Subdivision freight line parellels it to the East. There are two branch lines off the main on the Metra Electric. One going to Blue Island at State Street and another one that goes to 93rd Street which starts at 71st and Stony Island Avenue, then curves it's way South. North of Kensington, there are express tracks, running in each direction so South Shore trains and express Metra's don't have to interfere with any train making a station stop. The equipment used is strictly passenger mostly being the older ex. Illinois Central smoothside bi-level electric MUs built by St. Louis Car Company in the 1970s. There are a few newer Nippon Shayro cars that resemble a coach on a diesel route with pantographs. Chicago South Shore shares the line North of Kensington and runs their single and bi-level MU's. East of Kensington, the South Shore runs all the way ...

18th St is at the south end of Metra Electric's maintenance shops (the parked train is on a stub out of the shops), and south of where Illinois Central's Central Station used to be. Seen from the pedestrian overpass, a 4-unit, main-line University Park local train races and then overtakes a local, one-unit Blue Island Branch train. Next, from on the 18th St platform itself, a University Park express of Metra's newest cars (essentially electric versions of the newest Kinki-Sharyo cars for the diesel lines) speeds by with a short blast on the horn. Following not far behind is a rush-service NICTD South Shore Line interurban, the last of its kind in the country, with 6 cars bound for Michigan City, IN.

The rush hour beings on Metra's electrified former Illinois Central/ICG main line southbound out of Chicago, with CN's Chicago Subdivision next to it. The traffic noise in the background is Lake Shore Drive, which runs between the railroads and Lake Michigan. First is an inbound South Shore Line train of 6 new bilevel Highliners, followed by an inbound Metra South Chicago Branch train of 4 Highliners. Next is an outbound South Shore express run, with 8 cars--the longest consist the South Shore can accommodate--and an outbound South Chicago Branch train following it on the local track. Next is an odd 7-car University Park express train of Highliners, with a tiny, 2-car train heading for a local run on the Blue Island Branch following. Not long after, on the Canadian National main, is Amtrak's southbound Illini, powered by P42DC #184. This run has an unusual consist of one Horizon coach, two Amfleet coaches, 3 more Horizons, another Amfleet, and one Horizon trailing. Wrapping things up for now is an outbound University Park train, running express to Kensington.

Ride by twin sisters on the Metra Electric rail service (Chicago to University Park line) from and to Van Buren Street Station to and from Hyde Park (55th-56th-57th Street Station). (Not shown is the coyote that one of the sisters spotted loping along the tracks.)

Today was an interesting day to ride the Metra Electric District Main Line, as several extra trains were being run to accommodate fans headed to the Chicago Fire vs. Manchester United international soccer match at Soldier Field, near the 18th Street stop on the line. Here is a view from the rear vestibule of one of those "Chicago Fire Soccer Extra" trains, showing some of the highlights of the run into Chicago. In addition to some Metra Electric action at 18th Street, where crowds head to the soccer match, at Calumet and Hazel Crest, a CN manifest is being broken up in Markham Yard; at Ivanhoe a BNSF coal drag waits to get onto the Indiana Harbor Belt; at Riverdale we catch a glimpse of CSX's Barr Yard; at 95th St in Chicago, a freight crawls up the connector from the CN / IC to NS / Belt Rwy of Chicago, while an NS Triple Crown RoadRailer train passes overhead; at 87th Street, a CN rail train heads south; and we stop at two stations in Hyde Park. Enjoy!

Riding a new Metra Electric Highliner, with a view out the front vestibule window, from University Park to Matteson, Illinois, with a station stop in between at Richton Park. At University Park, the train of new cars arrives from Randolph St-Millennium Station with a load of rush hour commuters, then heads back into the city. The stretch between U Park and Richton Park is the only at-grade section of the Electric District's main line since the elevated embankment began at roughly between 47th-Kenwood. At Richton Park, a small coach yard exists north of the station, and the main line widens to two tracks. The Richton station has a stub track for trains ending their runs here. North of here at Matteson, (where a conductor told me to stop filming!) Canadian National's massive interchange project to connect their Illinois Central with their EJ&E, can be seen.

Northbound trains both, Amtrak's #390, the Saluki from Carbondale and Champaign-Urbana, and a Metra Electric University Park train of Highliners pass the CN construction at the far south suburban station of Matteson, Illinois. This is where Canadian National is building a connector track to link its newly-acquired EJ&E line to its ex-Illinois Central main line. The engineer of the Amtrak train gave me a nice "shave-and-a-haircut"!

This video was taken aboard CTA bus 6438, which is operating on Route #3 King Drive, while doing a run from Fairbanks and Erie in the Streeterville area (just north of Downtown), to 95th and St. Lawrence (Chicago State University) in the Chatham Community. This bus is a NOVA LFS. On this portion of Rt. #3, which was taped from Washington and Michigan to 8th Street and Michigan, we see a pretty small crowd of 7 to 8 people throughout the video. Major destinations on this portion of Rt. #3 are Downtown, Bank of America (Michigan and Madison), Millennium Park, Citibank (Monroe and Michigan), Grant Park, Van Buren St. Metra Station, Roosevelt University (Congress and Michigan), Congress Plaza, Columbia College (Harrison and Michigan) and Hilton Hotel (Balbo and Michigan).
