The Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) of the United States of America is the head of the Department of the Navy, a component organization (military department) of the Department of Defense. The Secretary of the Navy was until 1947 a member of the President's Cabinet, when the Navy, Army, and newly created Air Force were placed in the Department of Defense and the Secretary of the Navy was placed under the Secretary of Defense. The position of Secretary of the Navy is filled by appointment of the Executive Branch and requires confirmation by a majority vote of the Senate.
