The United States Department of Labor is a Cabinet department of the United States government responsible for occupational safety, wage and hour standards, unemployment insurance benefits, re-employment services, and some economic statistics. Many U.S. states also have such departments. The department is headed by the United States Secretary of Labor. Hilda Solis is the current Secretary of Labor. Seth Harris is the current Deputy Secretary of Labor.

The purpose of the Department of Labor (DOL) is to foster, promote, and develop the welfare of the wage earners, job seekers, and retirees of the United States; improve working conditions; advance opportunities for profitable employment; and assure work-related benefits and rights. In carrying out this mission, the Department of Labor administers and enforces more than 180 federal laws. These mandates and the regulations that implement them cover many workplace activities for about 10 million employers and 125 million workers.

The Department’s headquarters is housed in the Frances Perkins Building, named in honor of Frances Perkins, the Secretary of Labor from 1933 1945 and the first female cabinet secretary in U.S. history.

This US Army safety film for war plant workers was produced in cooperation with the National Committee for the Conservation of Man-Power in War Industries of the US Department of Labor. It promoted worker safety on the home front in support of the US war effort during World War II. The National Committee for the Conservation of Manpower in War Industries was established in June 1940, for the purpose of assisting private plants producing war materials on Government contract in the control of industrial accidents and diseases. Its services consist of (1) direct consultant service with war plant management through the medium of dollar-a-year safety men employed by private industry, who devote part of their time to rendering advisory service to nearby contract plants; (2) the training of key production supervisors and union labor representatives through courses sponsored jointly with the United States Office of Education under the Engineering, Science, and Management War Training program, and the training of foremen under a program sponsored jointly with the National Safety Council and the Vocational Education Division of the office of Education; and (3) the preparation by staff safety technicians and outside consultants of informational and technical material on industrial accident and disease prevention. This film focuses on worker behavior as the key cause of workplace accidents rather than look at hazardous job conditions. In the past, based on this attitude, workers were ...

Dr. Leonard J. Goldwater, a professor of medicine emeritus at Columbia and Duke Universities. His career spanned 60 years. He specialized in occupational medicine during the 1930's and 1940's, first with the New York State Department of Labor and then the United States Navy. In the 1950's he established the Bellevue Hospital cardiac rehabilitation clinic, which became a national prototype. He received a medical degree from the New York University College of Medicine in 1928, which was then known as University and Bellevue Hospital College of Medicine. After World War II he became a professor of industrial hygiene at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1970 he joined the Duke University Medical Center, where he organized the medical school's occupational medicine program. He retired from Duke in the mid-1970's. His stories include from his testimony at the 1936 Gauley Bridge Disaster hearings before the US Congress, to his work on benzene and blood dyscrasias in the late 1930's and early 1940's, through his extensive work on mercury and to his deposition testimony in the 1980's about the history of the knowledge of asbestos all gleaned from his work with the New York Department of Health, as Industrial Health Officer responsible for Navy shipyards during World War II and as a researcher and academic. This is clipped from an hour long informal oral history recorded in 1981 at the University of North Carolina. Thanks to Professor Carol Rice, Ph.D ...
