This is a brief portrait of the aqueduct and two of the boats that carry passengers across it. The recommended pronunciation is not exact, but it serves many of us locals well enough! The aqueduct, built between 1795 and 1805, is one of Britain's most spectacular products of the Industrial Revolution. Known as "The Stream in the Sky", it was designed by Thomas Telford, the self-educated son of a Scottish shepherd, and built under the direction of William Jessop. The cruise boat shown in this video and a horse drawn boat, both based at Llangollen Wharf, bear the names of these great engineers. Telford's use of a cast-iron trough to carry the water across the Dee valley was revolutionary, allowing a very light, lofty structure with the minimum of stonework. Indeed, the top portion of each pier is hollow. The approach embankment on the Froncysyllte side was at the time the biggest earthwork in the UK. It extends just as far (and high, 90 feet) as earthworks were less costly than fine masonry and cast iron! Also, a bridge of only one boat's width would have caused traffic congestion if it had been much longer, and the embankment has curves that align the canal with the ideal placement for the aqueduct..

The 1000 foot long Pontcysyllte Aqueduct near Llangollen in north Wales is the oldest operational cast iron aqueduct in the world. Built by Thomas Telford, it was opened in 1805 - the year Nelson won the Battle of Trafalgar. Telford built Pontcysyllte Aqueduct near Llangollen in 1795 and the structure continues to represent a masterpiece of Georgian engineering. Taking 10 years to build, the first stone was laid on 25th July 1795. To Telford's credit, just one life was lost during the construction which, for that time, was as impressive as the engineering feat itself. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct takes its name from a triple arched bridge a little further up the river and, literally translated, means 'the bridge that connects the river'. Described by the novelist Sir Walter Scott, as the finest work of art he had ever seen, the aqueduct carries the Llangollen canal on 19 slender arches, 126 feet above the Dee Valley.

Another attempt with the pole-mounted Nikon D90. Cruise boat "Thomas Telford" from Llangollen crosses with Aubrey at the helm and Helen and Phil as cabin crew, followed by Peter and Bev on "Sally". The towpath here is about 90 feet above the fields, increasing to nearly 127 feet over the bed of the river Dee. This view shows just why they call it "The Stream in the Sky", and it probably gives the best impression of the approach embankment from Fron, one of the biggest earthworks in Britain before the motorways were built. Charlie the dog just had to get in on the act, and a young lady in a spectacularly colourful hat illuminates the opening seconds! The noise is from tree trimming and shredding along the riverbank. Please excuse the dive into the towpath at the end; my improvised remote switch didn't work, and Windows Movie Maker is still on the blink! The "TT" operates daily between Llangollen Wharf (tel. 01978 860702) and Froncysyllte from the start of the Easter holidays to the end of October or, as this year, the first day of November. She cruises through over five miles of glorious scenery, making one two-hour trip each way with a bus connection included for the outward or homeward journey, whichever you choose to take. A commentary and friendly buffet service are provided. There are a few seasonal-themed "mince pie" cruises in December, too. Also from the Wharf, during the summer season horse drawn boats operate upstream, where power boats cannot go. See other clips ...

The visit to Llangollen was the highlight of our vacation, with the main purpose to cross the aquaduct by barge. This grade 1 listed building, recently being granted world heritage status by UNESCO, is the highest and longest aquaduct in the world, a Welsh National Monument, and possibly the oldest working aquaduct in the world, having been open since the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Thomas Telford and William Jessop were the designers and engineers, and it took 500 men 10 years to complete. The aquaduct is over 1000 feet long, 11 feet wide, with the water trough 63 inches deep. 19 arches, each 116 feet high with a span of 45 feet support the entire structure, and the aquaduct holds 330000 gallons of water which is so clean, with very little processing, it serves as household water to the Cheshire area. Pontcysyllte is pronounced "pont-kersulty". Llangollen is an interesting, busy town, with plenty of parking in the town center from where you walk over the bridge and up to Llangollen Wharf. Once on board, we enjoyed the 2 hour journey along the Dee Valley and finally over the aquaduct, all with a live commentary from the skipper. There is a bar available, and light lunches are available. A courtesy coach was waiting at the end of our journey which took us back to Llangollen and dropped us off right in the center of town near to our car park. Perhaps for the more romantic, or for those who have already sailed over the aquaduct or maybe for those who have not got 2 hours to ...
