'The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus' is a film released in 1996 of an 11 December 1968 event put together by The Rolling Stones. The event comprised two concerts on a circus stage and included such acts as The Who, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, and Jethro Tull. John Lennon and his fiancee Yoko Ono performed as part of a supergroup called The Dirty Mac, along with Eric Clapton, Mitch Mitchell, and Keith Richards. It was originally meant to be aired on the BBC, but the Rolling Stones withheld it because they were unhappy with their performance.

The Stones contended that they withheld the film's release due to their substandard performance, because they had taken the stage early in the morning and were clearly exhausted. Many others believe that the true reason for not releasing the video was that The Who, who were fresh off a concert tour, upstaged the Stones on their own production. The Stones had not toured recently, and were not in top playing condition to match The Who.

It was first released as the B-side of the "Street Fighting Man" single in August 1968. The song was written by singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards. The song is a slow, country-tinged blues ballad. "No Expectations" was one of the famed Beggars Banquet songs recorded live with open microphones set between the band members. In his review of the song, Bill Janovitz says, "The loneliness expressed in the song is palpable; all about being left behind, the song is certainly a tribute in musical and lyrical tone to such Robert Johnson blues songs as "Love in Vain" â a favourite cover of the Rolling Stones â referencing such images as a train leaving the station."[1] Take me to the station, And put me on a train; I've got no expectations, To pass through here again Once I was a rich man and, Now I am so poor; But never in my sweet short life, Have I felt like this before "No Expectations" also features an acoustic slide guitar performance by Brian Jones. Jagger said in a 1995 interview in Rolling Stone, "That's Brian playing [the solo]. We were sitting around in a circle on the floor, singing and playing, recording with open mikes. That was the last time I remember Brian really being totally involved in something that was really worth doing. He was there with everyone else. For those of you who have not yet seen it, stop reading this and go out and rent it or buy it. But if you need more than just my word, at least check out clips of it here on youtube. If nothing else, you'll get a chance to see what inspired my video. I wish I had been there to see the acts like the Stones, The Who, Taj Mahal, and John Lennon with The Dirty Mac. But what would have been even more incredible than just being there would have been to perform there. But alas, I was not even born yet in 1968. So the best I could do was to create some puppets and a small scale version of the set in my garage. This is the first song of a three song set that I'll be performing on that little stage. They'll get posted here on youtube as I finish them.
